Bamboo vs. River Cane identification

rcontreras

I've been told that the easiest way to tell river cane (Arundinaria gigantea)from non-native bamboo is that river cane has only one shoot (correct term?) growing from each joint along the culm, and bamboo has two or three. Is this correct, or, as I suspect, is it more complicated than this?

Thanks for any help. I'm trying to find some river cane locally, but so far can find only bamboo.
