This Forum needs FAQ!

Don't you all agree? This forum has been busy since it started a couple of months ago. There are a lot of people out there including me who are very eager to get information about how to care for this plant. I think it's time to have a FAQ here. How to do it? I have no idea. Does somebody out there know how?

I agree! I would like to see a FAQ on hybridizing and growing amaryllis from seed. I'm trying to piece together info from bits and pieces I've found through various searches, but it is difficult for someone like me who is a beginner. Sorry I can't help with the know-how, but I would be one that would use and appreciate a FAQ.

Hi Maria - yes a FAQ would be great. From what I've read, I think each forum has to ask iVillage to have a FAQ. Then a participant in the forum is given a "key" to be keeper/maintainer of the faq. The process of getting the faq and maintaining it is not as easy as one might hope, unless you have a little time and persistence!

does this forum include cyclamen or is there another forum where I can post a question? I think here is as fine as anyplace to cover them in the FAQ. or to ask about them. For the time being I just noted/added cyclamen at the bottom of the outline. I've also got crinum so thanks for the note about crinum being included in the amaryllis forum. Before doing a search on Crinum, all I knew was that they were not hardy here. That was when I saw they were of the Amaryllidaceae family, thus thought The Amaryllis Forum would be better off handling the FAQ (if anyone volunteers and they agree to it), and to field questions there. As usual though, anyone can ask about anything they want at any forum...within reason of course...like not at Home Decorating or something...lol. Glad to see the section on critters! I figure you can provide a lot of good input on that, especially if 'your' Sun Disc daffodils come up and bloom in some strange places next spring. If ornamental Allium is refered to the Allium-forum then their introduction needs to be changed. At least the last time I looked the forum was described to be for growing onions and garlic. Their forum blurb reads: This forum is for the discussion of plants of the genus Allium, such as onions, garlic, leeks, shallots & scallions. I agree, that it would best be changed to include Ornamental Allium/Flowering Onions. I don't think that any bulb must be asked about on any one 'specific' forum as there are sometimes numerous forums where one can find the answers....for example, if lily questions don't get needed replies at The Lily Forum, it is fine to ask here. Canna are sometimes asked about here, though there is a Canna Forum, so members here can provide info but also suggest that more info can be found at The Canna Forum. In doing a search here on Canna I see there are 122 threads, so will touch on them as well in the FAQ, with reference then to the Canna Forum and the great Canna FAQ there. And with the tulips I think it is important to have one (sub?)section for garden hybrids and another section for botanical tulips. I agree and tulips will be rather extensive, sort of like the daffodils, since they are asked about so much. Then there are the tulips that are more like perennials than annuals. This FAQ is turning out to be quite a beast, but 'should' end up pretty good with everyone's input.

While I think that the "FAQ" as outlined by swanoir was presented tongue in cheek ('the humus'), many of the subsequent comments and/or links to threads that could/should be included in a FAQ were presented in a more serious tone. And maybe they do make sense as a foundation to a real LD forum FAQ. But I've also sensed something else in these comments that may contribute to the apparent lack of communication between new posters seeking advice and those that regularly frequent this forum and offer it. And that is that the long checklist provided by Miss R must be (or should be) answered in detail before posting. Well, of course not! But it is definitely something worth reviewing and giving some thought to. This checklist, or something very similar, is what most designers utilize when first meeting with a prospective client. It gives them a feeling for what the client wants to do with the property, how they intend to use it, what they hope to get out of it and how much effort (time/$$) are they are intending to put into it. Hopefully, reviewing an outline or checklist such as this could help to refine and focus some of those blank slate questions and even educate those new posters totally unfamiliar with the process the degree of complexity, the number of variables and exactly what is involved in the formulation of a landscape design. Even DIY landscape texts intended for the homeowner with no previous design or landscaping experience offer similar checklists to get one started thinking about the process. Obviously, this is overkill for those questions that are more issue-specific, but I think very appropriate for those that are much broader and far less focused.

Growing raspberries for the first time

Mike in Michigan -- yes, you should be able to get your raspberry bed prepped without too much trouble. If you have a weed problem, hit it with some roundup or similar first thing, as soon as weeds begin to grow, then till them in, amend the soil as appropriate, and you should be good to go. Or, if you don't want to use herbicides, do it the old fashioned way by digging weeds out by the roots, that sort of thing. Worst case scenario, you could always pot up the new raspberry plants and tend to them that way for a while if need be, then plant out when bed is ready. A couple of good sources: Indiana Berry and Nursery company. www.inberry.com Nourse Farms in MA. www.noursefarms.com I would be cautious about the source you mentioned above -- they don't have the most stellar reputation for quality or customer service. I have order seeds from them many years without any trouble, but I've given up on getting plants from them, as they are quite often not as labeled when they grow out ('Primrose' yellow lilac proved to be common purple lilac, 'Seckle' pear proved to be 'Winter Nellis'), or the order isn't filled properly and/or there are quality issues. But, they do have a $25 off of $50 offer going on, although they eat up a lot of the value of the coupon with inflated prices and shipping/handling -- you'd end up with something worthwhile, sooner or later, but it might take some wrangling with customer service to get it right if they goof up the initial shipment. Check out the Garden Watchdog at davesgarden.com for good reviews of mail order nurseries. As far as birds go, you generally will find that they are not nearly as big of a problem with raspberries as with some other fruits -- you might suffer minor losses, but as a rule, birds don't seem to go after raspberries nearly as much as they do strawberries or blueberries. I think it may have to do with the nature of the canes -- too flimsy to support the weight of most birds that would try to land on them. Canby is one really good summer raspberry, although it's an older variety. I'm sure that there are newer varieties out there that are as good or better. I myself just ordered a whole bunch of new plants for spring shipment from each of the above sources, expanding my patch with some new kinds after many, many years of the same old same old. I believe this forum needs a FAQ as well, especially since we are reaching the peak season for Amaryllises and many many newbies will be wanting to gain more information about the proper care and storage.

I definitely think we could benefit from an FAQ section or page, or whatever... there are lots of us who are novice growers and breeders... and each Christmas season brings new Hippi growers... I, for one, think it's an excellent idea...

I don't know that I have that much to offer an FAQ section, but I know I'd use one!

But who would be the one to set it up and update it all the time? FAQs are very helpful most of the time. Though I am amazed sometimes how few questions they really answer... So if someone would really take the time and energy, I am sure it would be a serious undertaking, though it could be compiled from posts here.

That is not me. :o) I can't even set up my own web site normally. No time here and absolutely no energy. When it comes down to dirty details, I prefer to be well informed, but not an expert. Ploidity, for instance, does not interest me whatsoever. How can you be an expert when some aspects of a given material you just ignore? :o)
So as it seems, if the FAQ is my job to do, then it was a nice idea, at least. :o)

If I knew more and had more free time, I'd volunteer to compile information... however, I think it's just a matter of putting together a listing of the most commonly asked questions and the correct answers... I wish I had the time to help put such a page together!

I agree though, it would be nice to have a compilation of wise thoughts about amarylli.

But the FAQ would be the most basic questions. "Ploidy-doidy" issues should not be put there. Example questions would be:

1. What should a healthy bulb look like?
2. How do you plant a bulb?
3. Soil requirements?
4. watering/fertilizer?
5. Light? Staking?
6. After flower care?
7. How to put to rest?
8. Waking up a bulb after dormancy.
9. Pollinating (basic info only)
1. Germinating seeds and growing seedlings
What do you guys think?

Haha, I'm coping with my CHAD by buying pots and gardening supplies. I think it will get to you today, I forgot that you're three hours before Eastern time. =)

Yes, Hopflower, our local HD have 50% off all the pots so I've been buying out all their terracotta pots (trying to switch over all my plants to terracotta), potting soil, fertilizers, and other miscellaneous gardening supplies. =) If I bought a plant everytime I had a relapse, my house would be the Amazon Jungle and can't have that. =)

I amn going to have to check my local HD now. Tomorrow I just may drive by it, so will have the chance then. If not; Saturday I definitely drive by it and I will go in there. I have not been to HD in awhile so it might be worth it. They might be clearing shlves for Christmas, for instance. Heheh!

we have communicated about it already in e-mail, but I promised you to make a note here too, that your package has arrived today very neatly packed, each bulb in its own newspaper so it wouldn't get bored during shipment. I have already told Maria that her Santana is in a safe place now. Everything is green and wonderful, and I can't wait to plant your huge bulbs. It is interesting, that the bulbs in my area were so small compared to these huge monsters I am getting from Illinois and Virginia. Interesting.
