Swine flu alert

I've read on the media that the flu is killing many people in Mehico and is spreading fast into the US and Canada.

Please, people, be aware of it and take precaution. We want to stop it short.

Given the weakness of the US southern border,because of the desire of worldcorp to have cheap labor,it is likely that this will rapidly spread,especially in the states where agriculture is a mainstay. Florida is very likely to suffer greatly,because of the amount of illegal residents,mostly from Mexico. Hopefully, it will not gain hybrid vigor as it mutates. We'd like to reserve that for the flowers.

A 23 month old toddler died from the swine flu in Texas. I have two small children. I can't stop thinking about those poor parents.

Luna, the flu is in our area now too. My 1 yr old GS is at doctor right now to see why he's so sick. Waiting on them to call at the moment. Hope you are soon feeling better, and that Bob doesn't get it too! When I was at the dr last week for my monthly visit, I was going to get a flu shot, but they said that most insurance won't pay if you get it the same day you're being seen by the doctor. How ridiculous! I haven't had the time to drive back across town to get it, and may regret it now. We need to stay on our politicians to make insurance coorporations be more reasonable & accountable with our citizens' healthcare needs. Some bad decisions constantly being made by them, all in the name of profit. What about human suffering and medical needs? Prevention? An ounce of time saves 9? etc. Sheesh ..... I don't see how some of the insurance "deciders" can look themselves in the mirror! For example, back in the 1980s I was an insurance clerk in a Family Practice office. They denied a little girls diseased tonsils being removed, because she had tonsillitis previously. Duh? Why the heck else would you take them out, because they were never a problem in the past? Lawsy .... it just makes me shake my head in disbelief, and it made me go back into printing, and forget about doing medical insurance for a living! ~tenderlee

I did get one of the 70's swine flu shots . Almost killed me . I was on my back deathly ill for days . A lot was learned in the science community through that disaster and corrected . I have gotten a regular flu shot every year since the 80's . The shots really work ! People near me have gotten the flu and been knocked out for three weeks while I either never got sick or felt a little low for a few hours . Which would you rather experience ? A flu that can kill or staying healthy ? Modern flu shots do NOT make you sick .

I got both of them this autumn, the seasonal flu shot in September and the H1N1 in October when I worked at a City Flu shot clinic. No problems with either one. I get a flu shot every year. I work every day with very vulnerable people. Having had the flu before, I NEVER want it again, and I certainly don't want to pass the flu on to someone who might die from it. Yes, there are risks, as there are with anything we do, but the risks from a flu shot, or any other immunization are very, very small, considering the millions of people who get immunizations every year. Several years ago I got both the flu shot and the Pneumovax and 4 days later I had shingles. It might have been too much of a jolt to my immune system (but it might have had nothing to do with the immunizations), but with quick medication, I got through it with minimal discomfort. In the future, I'll continue to get both vaccines, just not at the same time. It's the non-immunized who spread disease - whether it's a preventable childhood disease or influenza. Non-immunized children pass measles, rubella, whooping cough, etc, to children frequently too young to have been immunized. These diseases can still kill children. My SIL was not allowed to get his smallpox vaccination before he left home for his deployment in Iraq because of the risk to both kids. I agree with igloochic, if you are not going to get flu shots, stay away from others if you feel sick, don't assume it's not the flu, the risk is too great to other people.

same here.... it's more media than anything else. I was online for a while last night, finding out whatever became of Jessica Lynch, the 'big recovery'...and all of that media frenzy... I soooo much dislike television and the hyped up media! they interviewed that little Mexican boy, who had it and was down for over a week, so sick...but he recovered and he's in Mexico, on a pig farm... he wasn't the first but he was the first they could do a mucous test on, so they knew he really had it. you ain'ta gonna die one day before your time is up... might as well enjoy everyday you have and make the most of it. drink lots of water!...but not in Mexico.

It's just the flu. The child that died was NOT from Texas, he did not get sick in Texas and had underlying health problems. The family gives a very weird story of crossing the border, the child was ill, the child wasn't ill, they drove to Houston, they didn't drive to Houston, they took the child to the ER at Texas Childrens, they didn't take the child to the ER, they took the child to Valley Baptist, they took the child back to Valley Baptist, they were traveling, they weren't traveling....it changes hourly. Bottom line, it was a child with other health problems, did NOT get sick in the US, the family may or may not be ill and they may or may not be driving around Texas.
NO US CITIZEN HAS DIED.

Masks are pretty useless against flu viruses.
Wash your hands, avoid sick people, stay home if you are sick.
There is no vaccine, one might be ready by fall. Flu cases drop off in summer-the virus needs cool temps, there may be a surge of cases in the fall.

Germany, the UK, Sweden, Canada, USA, Mexico and several other countries have reported cases.

Take a deep breath. Relax. Go to work, go to school, go shopping. Don't take tamiflu, don't call your doctor to get antibiotics. Check the CDC website for more information. Remember the warnings and vaccinations of 1976? No swine flu epidemic then either, just a lot of panic and problems with vaccines.

PS, I am a nurse, I live close to Houston, we are answering calls about swine flu. We had a teenager at the house this weekend who has the flu. I'm not doing anything. Except working and wishing I was off and in the garden. :)

I think this whole thing is over hyped and over blown. More people die from regular flu each year then will die from this.

Take precautions but don't freak out about it.

Way too much hype and panic... the only people at any risk are infants, the elderly, and anyone who is already in a weakened state or has an immune deficiency.

People don't usually die from the influenza, itself... they usually die from complications of pneumonia, which strikes while the system is weakened from the flu.

Simply be aware, and take care of yourselves. Echinacea capsules are known to help boost the immune system, so a person could take those to help a little.
