holy crap!! what a day

So my mailman knocked on my door today to give me a package.... it was from a co-worker of my hubby's. We shall call him 'A' ( I don't want anyone to get in trouble) A's father works for a seed company and A sent me some of his Dad's leftovers.

I opened the box to find a mind boggling amount of seed packets.... after several hours of sorting and packing I finally have a total count.

714

Did you catch that number?? seven hundred and fourteen. Even if I had 100 acres, I'd never need that many seed packets.

After I give the ones to my family and friends want, I will be offering them up here. I have veggies, herbs, and flowers. Mostly annuals, but some perennials mixed in.

I can't even trade them because then I'd still have too many lol

They are common types, so if you are looking for anything exotic, I probably don't have it.... but this will be awesome for anyone just starting out.

It may take me a while to get the list done of what I have, but if there is anything you are dying for, feel free to ask and I'll see what I have.

Even after sorting them all and organizing them,its still a mind boggling sight.

This means you clearly have a reputation. Considering that the reputation must be upheld, perhaps you should plant them all. Start saving more containers!

Phildeez, you're on the right track. It's better to ID bugs first rather than just kill them indiscriminately. The Davis IPM sheets can be a bit of a challenge to traverse at first, but over time you'll come to find things easier. I just wish the entry points were based on the bug's overall description rather than generic entry points like "Natural environment pests." If we could start our searches with "hard body", "six legs", or such it would be a much better resource IMO.

Congratulations on your baby tomato plants. Once they have sprouted, true leaves should appear within a few days. For what it is worth, I don't cut off the extra plants. Instead, I break apart the peat pellet and transplant each plant into a styrofoam, plastic or paper cup with drainage holes punched in the bottom of the cup. There are very good reasons for doing this, and the main one is that if you want a certain number of plants, you have to expect to lose some along the way before they get transplanted into the garden. So, it is best to have "extras" as back-up in case disaster strikes. The less experienced you are at raising from seed, the better it is to have extra plants. Peat pellets work OK, but I only use them as "germinators" when I use them. I plant multiple seeds per pellet and, as soon as the plants reach a certain size, I break apart the pellets and repot into cups of good-quality sterile, soil-less mix. I use the peat pellets to start some veggies, herbs and flowers but I don't grow anything to transplant size in the peat pellets because plants in peat pellets often have a lot of problems--including damping off and drying out too quickly. If you keep your peat pellets too moist, you'll likely have damping off and plant death. I let the peat pellets get good and dry before I water the flat. I water by pouring water into the bottom of the flat and letting the pellets soak it up. The advantage to peat pellets is that they are quick and easy. The disadvantage is that they tend to hold either too much moisture or not enough moisture and it is hard to keep them "just right". Today I am potting up my first round of tomatoes from their starter peat pellets to their cups--111 plants, 26 varieties. Usually I would have potted up the first round 7-10 days ago, but I haven't had time. All these plants won't make it into the ground because half of them are "back-ups" in case the plants are eaten by: the dogs, the cats, the deer, the rabbits, the sow bugs and pill bugs or the moles, voles and gophers. If the critters or bugs don't eat the plants, there's still the chance of very late frosts (had one here in southern OK last year during the first week of May), hail, tornadoes, floods, etc., so I keep my back-up plants around a while....just in case. After the late freeze, I had to replant quite a few plants to replace those damaged by frost, and it was a pain in the neck to do it--but it was better than going without those varieties. In the years when disaster doesn't strike, I have tons of extra plants to give to family, friends, neighbors, etc. or to take to plant swaps. Dawn

Yes, I 'm glad you popped in to comment, shannon! I heard Friday's evacuation for Lake Francis area has now been lifted. That is wonderful news for your mom. Some electricity has been restored to your Mom's area, according to our newspaper. If she gets her power from "The 300 mw Colgate Powerhouse," she has power. (Am I the only person who doesn't know the name of my powerhouse?) Honestly, I am in no danger. It appears to be burning away from me right now. Pray for the firefighters, the homes in imminent danger and of course, the poor wild life. Re: Arson. Shannon! I saw three fires too, in the beginning. Several of us (yahoos in the church parking lot) were talking about it and initially I hedged my bet on arson as well. Then a local fire chief dropped by the look out area to check it out and he though it was an electrical fire because of the three fire plumes. So us yahoos dropped the arson idea and decided we should bet with him. LOL! Maybe the bird triggered the electrical lines to spark in more than one area? Who knows. I am no expert on electrical wires or fires. As of last evening, the fire has spread to 3,260 acres. The weather isn't cooperating but we have an impressive army of firefighters on it. The paper said we have about 1,582 firefighters from around the state, assisted by 96 engines, 13 helicopters, four air tankers and 18 bulldozers. Five firefighters have been injured, but the injuries were considered minor, thank goodness. My niece is still evacuated and the road to her house is closed. We're optimistic because they don't have a lot of fuel around their house, making it easier to defend.

Thank you so much for all your tips and support! I truly appreciate it. I know that others have gone through this and survived and seen their vision come alive-so I am hoping we will get there at the end. I walked in after work yesterday and oh my! was it different. All the walls and ceilings down to studs, wires hanging everywhere, and was it HOT! Didn't realize how much heat the attic reflects off. I stood for a long time at the front door trying to see in my head how it will look all together and wasn't succeeding at all. Things look so much better after a full night's sleep. I can see where we are going and not feel like all the $$$ we are throwing in as a waste. Some of you asked about interesting findings from the demo. Nothing cool here-other than a old Beatles trading card. Showed it to my 8 yr old and he just shrugged!! kids these days :-).They also found my missing cutting boards(i use the thin plastic ones for some things), some old knives and placemats. It is amazing how much space was there between the framed cabinets and the pantry for thin things to slip through. Good thing we are doing frameless now! Yes, I found my stash of wine in the midst of all the chaos in the basement. Spent all evening cleaning up the basement and now at least there is a path from one end to the other. Today morning was much smoother for everyone. Hope we will get into a groove by the weekend. Once again, thanks for all the support.

Wow what wonderful people to be so considerate. They must have known that you would share the wealth. It was nice that they put them to go use instead of in the garbage can. If you have any salvia victoria blue or cosmos I would love some.

My favorite flower that I wintersown this winter was Dwarf Fairy candytuft(mixed colors) from Ferry-Morse seeds. They are beautiful! July is around the corner in another week. Consider it "Christmas in July!"

Sounds like a "perfect day". When do you think you may have a beginning list available?

I am interested in a variety of veggies, herbs and flowers. With the long growing season we have in south Texas I still have time to plant lots of things.

Sorry i assumed you would know what I was talking about lol.. I do a plant sale for Children s Hospital in Boston. With lots of help( Zahzeen,gardenweed,Trudi,and Nancy among the masses) i raised 10%00 for the hospital in May 2010.

Wow what a neat surprise. We're starting up a Community Garden here in my Township so I would be interested in some of your veggie seeds if they need a good home. Just e-mail me and I will send you postage money if you decide to send some my way. What a great gift!

Go to the bottom of the page and click on Member Pages. That will take you to a list of links and click on Edit Your Exchange Lists.

You are not an idiot, many of us forget when we don't use the member pages very often.

Thanks. I did find it.. but AFTER I posted about it. Makes me wish that GW had an edit feature.

I have the first half of the list done.... I should have started with the veggies--- that'll be the longest list, wiht more sub-categories.

The list is now updated on my trade list... but please bear with me. My family and friends aren't as quick as the rest of us about getting their seeds.
After things start leaving, I'll get a packet count of each kind.

Its not easy to deal with these. I have a 18 month old daughter who wants to help me, so I can only do so much while she's napping :)
A few times now I've screamed as I saw her dip her hands in the box.... I really don't want to have to re-sort them all.
I'm going to limit this first round of requests to those of you who have already commented above, and in order to keep my sanity, I'm also limiting this first round to 5 packets per person (Mone, you are the exception to that number)
I will do another round of requests after I get all these sorted and sent out.
So, everyone who commented above, and who want something off the list, send me an email and I will send you my snail mail address.

On a side note-- Michelle, I already knew about your program with the hospital. I remember reading about it here, and a another GW member had already contacted me asking me to send you the leftovers.
So, I was going to surprise you with an anonymous box of seeds, but I'm fairly certain you'll know where they came from now ;)
