to get the Hippis outside to catch the sun.

That is what 3 inch hail will do to Hippis that don't make it back inside in time :(

It looks like I may have to do a bit of surgery as there are chunks ripped out of the tops of several bulbs and I am sure there is deeper tissue damage from the impact.

The greenhouse roof,which I just replaced,has been destroyed,the roof of the house is tarped & the cars look like Swiss cheese.

All two & four legged creatures are ok (for the moment) and we are gathering in for another round of storms :(

Any kind thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Lora

Oh my gosh Lora, wow! I am SO sorry! I read about your greenhouse roof replacement a few weeks back and thought how terrible then! And now you are going through all of this again! I am soo sorry. Glad all of you and your animals are ok for the short-term. I have never seen 3" hail - can't image what that sounds like on the roof of the house or the car (or the windows!!) I hope this next round of storms does you no worse. You will be in my prayers.

I feel for you, very sorry that this happened, but glad that you and your family are OK. Two thoughts: 1) use 1/2" plexiglass for the greenhouse. 2) the damaged amaryllis bulbs should be allowed to dry out around the damaged areas, so maybe dig out some of the soil so most of the bulb stays exposed to air and be careful watering. Maybe use Hans' suggestion of bottom watering.

Okay now, come on confess, all of you, WHAT DID YOU DO TO ANNOY THE WEATHER GODS!!!!! As I stated in the best place to live post, I have been out weeding, raking and burning brush. Nice enough today to burn, raining now. Best March here in years. And as you call us the frozen tundra, yeh "what is the point"? LOL Remember Hosta are tough and a little bit of snow will only do them good. I bet your hosta this year will be the best yet. Don't worry, be happy. All the moisture in the ground. They say we are supposed to have a dry spring/summer here this year. Now you can sympathize with what we usually go through, and whose to say, we will probably have snow in April. Won't be the first time. The only thing we cannot control is the weather, no matter where we live. By the way, the golfers have been playing on the greens since last week. Hi Kathy!! I agree, you just never know... life does come from things least expected sometimes!!! I was really pleased to see these little stems. The funny thing about this is that i have this tree just sitting in my greatroom. The others are under lights and then some of my active trees are with this little sad looking tree. Im going to leave it right where it is. It must really like the conditions there. So...i will let it be! Dave, I was wondering the same thing!!! Tomorrow i will call Carol and ask her. Well, this is more of a re-discovery I guess. For the past 3 summers we have been painting our exterior (basically done as of this Sept). The new paint job has proven how out of place the aluminum storm door on the kitchen looks. I knew the original wood storm door was in the basement, and plan to repaint and replace that in the Spring. BUT, we also have an aluminum storm door on an exit to the balcony off of our second floor master bedroom. It doesn't bother me as much, because from the front of the house it basically matches the 3 aluminum storm windows that are also on the front of the house, if you don't look too closely. A few weeks ago I was in the attic digging through clothes bins for the kids and realized that there is a wooden storm door up there too ~ the only place I can figure it came from is that bedroom door! Yay ~ I never gave that old door a second thought until that moment. We have lived in our house for over 12 years. All of the original storm windows were in the basement, broken off double-hung window weights are in the attic and the original swinging door from the kitchen/pantry are in the attic... I just never noticed that wood storm door before. So now I guess I will have 2 wooden doors to re-paint this spring ;)

It wasn't over with quickly,either.
In some ways we were so fortunate. We didn't lose any windows because I've replaced broken storm windows with Lexan over the years. My jaw did drop when we got the first repair estimate, a full 1/5th of the value of the house !
The greenhouse is not covered under the homeowners policy so that is out of pocket. I have it covered with 20mil plastic as that is all I can find right now.Roofing supplies are out of stock cause the damage was so widespread.

When Lexan is back in stock I will be using it! I had been using 2 layers of the ribbed polycarbonate with a spacer and an inflated layer of 20mil plastic sheeting over it. I expect to replace the sheeting every year or 2 but not the polycarb.
So far Charisma and White Christmas are gonners,they turned into mush.The seedling that looks like Pink Impression has survived surgery and the rest will probably be ok in time. The bruising is deep into the bulbs and I'm keeping a close eye on them.
We did get a break with the last round of storms, just rain & thunder :) Lora

Wow,

You know when we had hail here I didn't realize it could cause so many problems for people. It's usually so small I don't think I realize how huge it can get and what damage it can cause. Glad you and your family made it through ok.
