Creating your own Hybrids

Hi Everyone,

I have hundreds of Hippeastrums in my garden and have fallen in love with them. I'm curious as to how to create my own hybrids of these beautiful plants, I understand it will take time and patience, both of which I have.

It's lots of fun Luke. I'd say, figure out what your objective is, that is what you want it to look like. Then find the ones that have similar traits to make good parents. I take pollen with tweezers and put it on the stigma, and let nature take its course. Plant the seeds and wait a few years. Below are 3 from the same cross. The first two look very similar, or the same. A bit like 'Lima', but the last one is more unusual.

My recommendation is that you add H.papilio to your collection.
The collection of Houstonpat for example consists predominantly of H.papilio, and the hybrids displayed here are primary hybrids in regard to H.papilio and I consider that these are the most spectacular and beat a lot of commercially available hybrids. But (again) what is the parent(s) and which was the pollen partner and the mother plant(s), respectively? Believe me, Houstonpat, I would HIGHLY appreciate those informations, and I think others would, too.

Luke, I have performed several hybridizations with H.papilio too, and I want to show you an example how different the siblings of ONE individual cross can look like. The hybridization was:
H.papilio x "Pink Floyd", and the array of names means by onvention that H.papilio was the mother plant (seed producer) dusted with "Pink Floyd" the pollen partner.

It appears to be very climate, soil and water and varietally variable. Those which were introduced before budding was the favored propagation method, usually performed well in the old garden, unless chlorosis was an issue with them as the conditions were very alkaline. Many of the initially budded ones performed well there, too, but once the soil had been sufficiently amended with enough manure and water was laid down in abundance, most did quite well. The main exceptions were those which were just weak varieties to begin with. Most of them did much better when budded on Huey as that is the stock most suited to these conditions. Also, many, whether good in the mid desert own root or not, just didn't perform well in the colder, damper soils along the coast. It was quite interesting observing what did well with heat in the desert soil, then nose dived at the coast. I'd imagine your conditions in Oregon would be more like the coastal conditions here, Paul, only much more extreme. I can well imagine them not performing well, or as well, for you there own root. Of course, I'd also expect the increased fungal pressure you experience had a symbiotic relationship with their performance. Growing weaker would make them more susceptible to attack, and stressed by attack, they would perform more weakly. Very interesting, thank you! Kim

Finally the right mold for the veggies in my 'Romantic Salad'. The other shapes I tried were, sadly, misinterpreted. Seriously. It makes the fruit look like Spree candy. They already make square molds for watermelons so they stack. Why not tomatoes? This device will probably find its niche, perhaps even more popular than the 'Flowbee'. Wish I'd invented it. Would you trust a builder to create a blueprint from your own sketch?

After reading many of these recent comments, meandering here and there as extended threads almost always seem to do, I had to go back to the OP to see what in the world started this thread. It was: "...do you think solely working with a builder would suffice?...I feel like I would be telling an architect exactly what to do as far as design. But I can see where we might need a draftsman to translate our design into a blueprint? Or can the builder fill the role of a draftsman?" It's really the old, often repeated question, "do I really need or have to use an architect, or can I just I just build using my own sketch, which someone translates into dimensioned drawings?..." And the answer, in most U.S. jurisdictions, is yes you can build from your own sketch, assuming you can get design review approval (if required) and a building permit. You may even be able to get financing from your own sketch, or at least from dimensioned drawings of your sketch--depending on the lender and the loan sum to value. And one can usually find an experienced builder who will work with an owner's sketch, and offer to build from it using some sort of construction contract (favorable to the builder's risk, more often than not). There are a number of jurisdictions in the U.S. which do require architectural drawings (by a licensed architect) for design review and/or building permit, particularly for homes over a certain area or storeys, in certain site/soil conditions, or in areas designated for special historical or architectural control, but these are nowhere near the majority of jurisdictions. But at the end of the day, the answer, like so many answers, is really: it depends. It depends on answers to questions like: --Does the site and jurisdiction where you wish to build require documents and calculations from a licensed professional; --Is your budget so limited and critical that a 6%-10% architectural fee is simply impossible; is an initial design consultation of $1K +/- out of the question; --Do you see your house as primarily shelter from the elements and you have no other strong concerns or desires about it; --Do you or anyone in your family have special needs; --Are you a rugged and experienced DIY person who gets personal reward from doing everything yourself; have you ever designed and built a house before; --How concerned are you about a fixed or manageable construction budget, and the level/type of construction expertise and features you will actually receive for your project? There are other important and useful questions, but hopefully the point is clear: using your own sketches for construction of a home depends on the answers to these and other important questions. And since no two of us are alike or in the same circumstances, the answer to using one's own sketch for building is, wait for it...it depends. And like all decisions, there will be a series of consequences which occur based on the decision that each of us may make in this type of situation. PS: And I guess I have to say that CAD, the computer and all of our disruptive technology neither pose any important questions in a situation like this, nor do they provide any particularly useful answers. They are simply a tool, a means to an end, and certainly not the end.

I cannot give you the most relevant advice gardening in zone 6b, but for what it's worth... Grafted hybrid teas (for me on Dr. Huey or Multiflora), on an appropriate rootstock for your zone and soil conditions (I bet roses on fortuniana rootstocks, if you have sandy soil, will thrive, and if clay, Dr. Huey may do better), have always done better for me than own root roses. That said, I grow mostly own root HT roses, a contradiction at first glance, but my HTs are mostly 21st. Century introductions, which are bred to perform well on their own roots, which they do for me, and I am satisfied. Still, I am pretty much of the opinion that even 21st. Century grafted HTs will grow bigger, produce more flowers, and outperform own root of the same varieties, growing side by side. The older, pre-1990 HTs, were bred to perform on root stocks, not necessarily on their own roots. I would advise you to try only grafted HT roses if the variety was introduced in the last century and own root HT varieties if they are current century introductions, but when a choice is available, opt for grafted regardless of their era. For example: I always wanted to grow Pope John Paul II, but the reports were that it liked heat, mild winters, and wimped in the North if own root, which was all I could get, until I finally got two, PJP II grafted on Dr. Huey. They are beauties, winter tender, not extremely vigorous, but abundant bloomers. That's 6 years ago, and 30" tall by season's end, these recent years. If I got my PJP II at first on their own roots, I believe that they would have died out years ago. Moses

I would love to see the pictures too. I have seen similar thing with waterlilies and daylilies, but I haven't seen any with amaryllis too. I am sure it will be very educational.

Quite right Sir Hans-Werner,
The above crosses were my first and it took a bit of time to recall what the crosses were. They were all crosses 'Papilio x Red Lion' done in 2003. With Papilio being the seed parent and Red Lion being the pollen donor. Now, at the time of cross pollination I put a label on each flower with the information. The pic below is a cross the other way with Red Lion being the seed parent and Papilio being the pollen donor.

Thank you Houstonpat for the additional information!
Several weeks ago I pollinated 4 flowers of "Red Lion" with H.papilio, and the seed pods started well but they wilted after 2 weeks. While I am rather unfortunate in crossing H.papilio with TETs in either direction, I focuse my efforts on crossbreeding with my two specimens "PapDon" of H.papilio x "Donau" (Donau = Danube). A friend of mine who had received one bulb of PapDon1 has just obtained seeds out of "Pink Floyd" x "PapDon1" That is exciting!

Here I go with a new attempt to show my crossbreeding results of
H.papilio x "Pink Floyd"
For that purpose I included the pictures in a message in my home forum :)

Sir Hans and Pat...All your creations are beautiful! Such inspirations!!!

Last season, I got lucky with these:
CarnivalXPapilio
PapilioXGilmar/Jade Serpent (seeds got mixed up)
PapilioXLa Paz
PapilioXEmerald

Seedlings are doing good getting TLC. The XEmerald and XLa Paz seedlings went to sleep in early spring! Very strange. Do Papilio crosses really do this?

This season's attempts (seedpods):
PapilioXStriped Panther - 6 weeks old
PapilioXNight Star - 6 weeks old
ChicoXPapilio - 4 weeks old.
Jungle StarXPapilio- 3 weeks old
others still under observation...

Papilio has the biggest seedpod while Chico has the tiniest dotted seedpod! I hope I get viable seeds from this.

My 'star' cross for this season (if I get lucky):

The upper picture shows the trumpet hybrid "Pink Floyd" and the last is "PapDon1" out of H.papilio x "Donau"
Since the issue of this discussion has so obviously focused on "creating your hybrids using H.papilio" I continue with these. Some of them DO beat what is commercially released, and this is certainly a special motivation not to speak of the very satisfaction.

Sir Hans...Oh my, oh my...
The 'wings'...Just very lovely!!!

I just recently acquired Donau and it is right now in bloom. I would freeze some of it's pollens and try to use it next time the Papilios bloom.

My Papilios are done blooming and I just harvested 2 seedpods:
Papilio X Night Star
Papilio X Striped Panther

The seeds don't have dots! Yaaayyyyyy!!!

Gorgeous, Hans-Werner!

Maria, I have young seedlings growing of Misty X Papilio. These were newly purchased Papilio. One was from B&B and the other from John Scheepers (improved). The B&B did not look the same as the first one that I purchased from them. It looked more like Papilio Improved. I tried to cross them, but was unsuccessful. The selfings of both were also unsuccessful.

My older Misty and Papilio (healthy, healthy, healthy) have not bloomed, but it appears that my older Pink Floyd will.

We've learned a lot from Hans-Werner in the last few years, haven't we?
