long neck bulb photos

After a clean up, the bulb doesn't look as bad as I thought. Neck is 3-4 inches and definitley unique.

Hi Kristi,

That is longer than any of my three Exotic Star bulbs that I consider to have long necks. It will be interesting to see yours bloom and to discover which variety it is.

It looks very much like my xJohnsonii. Do you know what variety it is, or do we have to wait for blooms?

It looks like any other bulb that you'd dig up out of the garden... they'd be planted deeper in the garden than in pots, of course... and once out of the soil, you can see that the long neck is protecting the leaves. If I didn't know better, I'd say you just dug that one up.

HI Big. I think you should continue to cut anything more off the bulb that appears to be rotting. Go as far as you need to and make sure you document it with pictures. You will need to send those photos to Komoriya for proof that there is a problem.. My first aulicum from them had some mite issues and I sent them pictures of the marks on the leaves as well as the dying leaves from the center of the bulb. They told me to wait until next year to see how it responded. About a month later I send them more pictures of more dying leaves and this time they offered to send me a replacement and they sent me 2!! If you do need to contact them go through EBay that way EBay also gets a copy of the complaint and I can't help but think that makes them a little more diligent in righting the situation. St. Kristi, Patron Saint of Hippeastrum! You're right, that does have a nice ring to it! Last summer/winter/mid-spring, after moving back home from college, I kept my hippis inside on my window sill. Now, that didn't work out very well, haha. Good sun, but TERRIBLE space. So, I repotted and put them outside (even though I was super nervous to put them out there with all the little critters) for late spring and early summer. Let me just say I was SHOCKED at how much they LOVED it! I've never seen them grow so much! It made me happy that they were happy. I know we live in different zones, but I feel like we have the same weather! The last week of October we had our first frost, so it was time to bring the hippis in the garage (no windows, stays relatively cool, and very dry). Last night, only about 5 weeks later, we had our first "snow" (I put snow in quotes because only the tippy, tippy, tops of the surrounding mountains got a very light dusting). But between the first freeze and the first snow, we've had two periods of the weather getting back into the upper 60s to low 70s! I was tempted to throw them back outside for those few days, but I knew I didn't need to throw them off. This is my first time trying this method, and I'm a little nervous. The weather looks to be more consistent now... Lows in the 30s and highs in the 50s. So I know it's the right time for them to rest (they haven't really rested since I first got them in winter 2009). I'll have room for them inside when they're ready. Hopefully I'll get some blooms! I have a fear of killing them, but I don't think I'm that negligent; I check on them *every*day. What are they gonna do?! Run away??? Haha. It's posts like this that take away some of my fears. :) -Kate

Wow...your garden reflects your hard work, planning and care. I totally agree about raphiolepis. It's just one of the best garden staples around, trouble free, blooms beautifully with dark green foliage. I just don't understand why people don't plant more of them and less of those tempermental, itchy azaleas! Don't you just love the color of those tender rose leaves when they first burst forth after pruning!? Thanks for sharing your pictures.

Awesome! Very nice, Mike. I love that corn snake and mole kingsnake. And as always, your photography is spectacular. Especially that copperhead shot. That oughta be in a field guide. I'm driving from the Smokies to Wilmington in late June. If you know of any places that you could point me to (by email of course), I would definitely love to hear them. Or if you know of anyone that I could contact, let me know. I'm hoping to have a great two week herping adventure. Once again, awesome pictures, and thanks for posting. Definitely worth the wait.

Nope....it's been sitting on a pile of rocks in a glass bowl for probably 3 years. It has to be a common (ie, Christmas special at Home Depot) bulb!

Hi Kristi,

Maybe a matter of perspective, the bulb is skinny vs the neck is long, lol. That is a very hungry bulb & the long neck will shorten as the bulb builds up.

I agree with Lora... watch the bulb grow now that it has the nutrition offered by the soil! As long as you keep it fed, it should fatten up nicely over summer!

In particular, I have noticed two varieties of bulbs that exhibit this 'long neck'.

They are 'Johnsonii' and 'Exotic Star'.

That does not mean that others do not do it. It simply means that these have long necks, for ME, and I have noticed it!

I suspect, but cannot prove it, that long necks can be a characteristic of a bulb and not a default.

My xJohnsonii definitely has the longer neck... but my Exotic Star is round and plump with the short neck of a regular hybrid.

I suspect that some part of the "long neck" syndrome has to do with how the leaves die back and where they're clipped off when dead... on the other hand, xJohnsonii just seems to have a smaller, narrower build with the long neck of a bulb used to being deeper in the soil.
