Leaves Before Flowers/Flowers Before Leaves

I know this subject has been discussed many times on this forum, but I can't find the answer I'm looking for. I have an amaryllis that has formed a bulblet. Both the bulblet and the mother have only sent out leaves the past year. The mother has had leaves since September, but no flower. The bulblet has shown no sign of growth until 2 days ago. I noticed a emerging flower stalk forming! Finally, out of all my amaryllis that have only leaves, the baby is the only one with a flower forming. Will a bulb always follow the same order of growth-with leaves and flowers? Why did the baby bloom and not the mother? I know fertilizing is important- I've been doing that, but I have only had luck with flowers with new bulbs. Thank you for any help!
