Yup ...i think you should try it. I did see an instance of culms coming thru asphalt but it was down south in florida or texas and i am guessing that the road is not prepared the same for people with frost etc. Now i saw a pic not personally. I'm guessing You have concrete drives? or blacktop....if you have concrete 4-6 inches thinck my guess is your safe. I claim to be no expert on this matter. the temerature i think is a big factor on its aggressiveness. I'm sure others will chime in.

I doubt you'd have any problems. Even though nuda is very cold hardy, it will likely be totally top-killed every winter, and may even die completely in a bad winter. Besides, you can rhizome prune it every fall as insurance. I've got over 25 kinds of running bamboo in a much more bamboo-friendly climate and I've yet to have one get away...so don't get freaked out by all those stories.

I wouldn't do it. A 2-3 foot space between two driveways? For a tall spreading phyllostachys? That's cruelty to bamboo.
And if the soil is hard and dry, why bother growing bamboo there? It will look awful is my opinion. Not to mention that culms are going to overhang your neighbor's driveway.
What might be better is a miniature spreading bamboo, one of the pleoblastus (sp?) guys. That would look awesome and you can maintaing it by just running your lawn mower over it each spring. They'll only get a foot or two high. They too, however, will need some water.

Go for it. If it get going and you want to control it just cut it back with clippers or a lawn mower (wear eye protection)

you can always kill it back and start over if it does not work.

Well here I go again on the Bissetii/Nuda thing, but I'd say go for it using Bissetii instead of Nuda. I think it will have a better chance to perform as you desire, will form the screen faster, is more wind tolerant than Nuda, and is probably hardier. Even if topkilled, it will come back with far greater vigor than Nuda.
