Hibiscusfan, I have bamboo that I can share with you. I cannot tell you the name, but I bought it many years ago from a gentleman in Seattle. It doesn't seem to go (grow) crazy like other varieties and has only spread to cover about 8 cubic feet in 10 years. I cut it to use as gardening stakes when needed. It's very beautiful and my hammock is strung nearby as it - when combined with a good read and even better glass of wine - is coma inducing with it's lovely, breezy cane music. Wow, that's really cool and well done! It's really bursting with life! Can't tell looking at that if they're the same plant or not. How cute is the little forest of babies?! I wonder if given more light if the new one in water would show some stripes on the leaves. Not that I think it's necessary, just naked curiosity. I would keep an eye on the ties once in a while, to make sure the trunks haven't gotten too tightly pinched.

Hi there, Today a friend gave me some cuttings from her bamboo. A black bamboo and a realy tall one (I know this won't help much in figuring out the latin names). They are not full Culms, they are branches from the main culm. I have them in water, soaking with some compost juice for nutrients. It works much like miracle grow. As I am reading this post, I am wondering which action I should take. Should I trim the bottoms, dip in rooting powder and put in dirt imediately (one web page suggests this)? Wrap the base in a ball of p.moss and perilite with foil wrapping? Should I use string to tie it off with? Do I need to use foil, or is there something better? Should I leave them in water for a few days, weeks, months? Once I had a "chunk" of bamboo in water in my window, it rooted. Then it whent into dirt. Now it is happy on the porch - or is it? Now you all have me worrying! Thanks for the helpful info!!!!

Every time you transplant you water IMMEDIATELY this is to settle the soil around the roots for good contact and to eliminate any air pockets which can damage roots. It is also a good idea to repeat the watering a day later. After that you want evenly moist soil but soggy soil is injurious to plants.
