Just thought I would share

mix of salvias. I think I need to deadhead them will that make them busier and prettier or can these be considered dead.

This is surpose to be "summer morning" delphinium but it is more white than pink.

Beautiful flowers. Your picture of the satellite dish reminds me of one I saw the other day. The person had planted a tall shrub like plant in front of it and all you could see was the dish sticking out!

central cali, Here in north georgia we have been in a terrible drought for some years now, as I've heard that most of cali is. I totally agree with you say "Rain really makes a world of difference - especially since we get very little of it", because it's the same over here. If you want a lilac, I happily recommend Lavender Lady. I tried growing an old french lilac I got at walmart last year, and it bloomed... then completely declined. It's flowers were tiny, whereas Lavender Lady had huge flowers of stronger fragrance. (The only thing I must say is that although LL had a stronger scent, the french one had a sweeter, more refined perfume). This year I planted a Blue Skies lilac. As for peonies, I have had the best success with Sarah Bernhardt. However, I would recommend that you spend your money on a pack of peony poppy seeds instead. They may not be as large or have the fragrance, but let me tell you that they are lovely, have a longer bloom season (if planted while it's cool), and I really don't like the scent of my peonies. To me, it is like a combination of a rose and carnation at first, then I notice a disturbing under scent of medicine, and something unpleasant I don't know of. If you want a better perfume, I recommend a good old rose and/or carnation because at least you will enjoy a pure aroma.

Hey Annie, Thank you for the compliments, just got done looking are your roses and I would have to say the same! I got the carnations at Lowes I think a few years ago. I love them! They are my birthday flower and I was so excited to find them as I didn't think they would do well down here but then again those places tend to buy things that don't do well for the area. Turns out they have done wonderfully. I do remember you telling me about your daughter living in Columbia and your someday visit down here which I am still looking forward to! :O) Yes, it is too bad she doesn't live closer as I would love to help her out. Mabe when you do end up coming to visit her we can all meet up at the zoo. Then you could come down to visit Charleston. I have a membership to Magnolia Garden and Plantation and I could show you around there and have a picnic there perhaps, I love it there. Maybe you could bring your daughter too and we could have a nice time. July and August are hot and humid though so be prepared. So far it really hasn't been too bad heat wise. We have actually had a nice long cool spring with a few hot days lately but not too bad. Looking forward to your visit! Congratulations grandma! ~Meghan

Beautiful pictures and outdoor space. I wanted to make a recommendation for working with a concrete slab patio. Sorry if you already know this technique. I have an old house and my laundry room floor is concrete. I cleaned the floor, etched it with the correct chemicals, painted it a solid burgundy. I took a clean pizza box, cut it apart, and cut a piece of foam to fit into the bottom of the box. Glue to foam to the top of the pizza box. Pour some paint into the bottom of the box (a contrasting color). Pour a couple of other colors side by side in the middle of the contrasting color. Take a stick and draw it through the colors, making a pattern through the paint. Dip the foam into the patterned paint and start stamping. I left space between the stamps so that the burgundy showed through as if it were grout. Now I know it's not granite and I usually only like "real" things, but it really warmed up the room. I know that some people in the "garden junk" forum have used the same type of technique to make brick patterns on concrete patios.

Thanks again, especially for the candytuft ID, they are the stars of the spiral right now but they're starting to go to seed. I have a fountain in the front yard, and although I agree it would look great I wouldn't want to deal with the hassle in that particular spot. Birds love fountains, consequently they need to be cleaned frequently and it always involves splashing a lot of water on the ground and walking around the fountain a bit. Maybe I could get a birdbath and hook it to the irrigation system, but a statue would be easier and require less maintenance. I think I'm a one fountain person, a second is not something I relish taking care of but I wouldn't dream of getting rid of the one I have. Most recently a bench has been added to the garden, I realized that the place where the path brushes the raised bed is the coolest and most comfortable spot to hang out so I mentioned it to the DH and next thing I knew we had a new bench. I love it, it's perfect for sitting and enjoying my new area.

Were the Hibiscus sown this year? On the Salvia, I say pinch out those flowers...it appears they started blooming too early before they made enough vegetative growth. I would suggest pinching out the top set of leaves too, but doesn't look like you have more than 2 set of leaves, so if you do that let more leaves emerge and then give a pinch :)

The Hydrangeas were store bought 3 years ago. and this is the first year I got it to bloom since I bought them. I did an experiement that the wind helped me with. I have 3 Hydrangeas so I had dh build me a little round cage out of cicken wire and then we placed over the Hydrangeas and then we covered them with the fallen leaves. Well in the middle of winter somehow one of the cages got blown off off one of the plants so I decided to leave it to see if the plant would still flower. Well needless to say it did not but the two that were covered has flower heads on them. So lesson learned.

Yes the hibiscus were winter sown but now I am not sure which if any is pereinnal or annual.

The salvia were store bought so who knows how they were treated.

I'll take a stab and say the Hibicus with Maple like leaves would be the annual Abelmoschus manihot, the other's look like H. I believe as it matures the leaves become more divided, but that's what my leaves look like now on those, but on smaller plants.
