I haven't posted photos in some time and wandering through the gardens this evening I thought I would share.

Olympicum Verbascum winter sown 2 seasons ago finally setting blooms. It is 6 feet tall and still growing at a rate of about 2 inches a day if not more.

I didn't plant this but believe it to be an Eryg???? Miss Wilmot??? There is another close by. Must be from winter sown containers which did not germinate but were 'dumped' into the gardens. Can someone tell me if it's a perennial? I nearly yanked it thinking at first it was a Canadian Thistle. Glad I didn't. :O)

This yarrow was winter sown last year. It shows no 'running' and grows in a good clump. So far it is about 4.5 feet tall. All those sown at the same time are showing the same character and have withstood good winds.

A rescued Luna Moth. She was caught between the floor boards of the veranda and I coaxed her out with a twig. Precious!!

Hi Aimeekitty, I agree with you that it's amalgam of fun, excitement and mystery when buying rare roses. When researching a rose, there are four invaluable resources - Gardenweb Rose Forums, fellow rose enthusiasts from the same climate zone, Helpmefind.com (HMF), local Rose Societies, and the rose breeder/seller. In my case with EuroDesert Roses, I ask for recommendations from Mr. Cliff when I do not find adequate information when researching a particular rose on HMF or other rose-related websites. My brother, Paparoseman, is an expert on OGRs and has a garden full of rare roses. He is the first person I approach when I have questions about about roses that thrive in zone 8a. Of course, members on the GardenWeb Rose Forums are an invaluable asset to the rose industry. They truly care about their fellow rose enthusiasts. I am ever grateful to these wonderful people! Oh...and you can also procure a wealth of information from your local Heritage Rose Society. This year, the bands from EuroDesert are much larger than the ones I got last year (which made me very happy!). It looks like HF Young, but there are a bunch of clematis that have similar color and bloom time that it could be, including Fujimusume, Silmakivi, Lasurstern, Zara, Cezanne, and Diana's Delight. There are also some with similar color that bloom a bit later, including Prince Charles.

Molie and defrost, your rock encircled gardens are both very beautiful! Jane, that Salix integra was worth all the effort you put into caring for it. It looks so light and fluffy! Claire, your impressive rugosa rose bush is what I hope mine will become! I love your other roses, but my luck with growing roses of any other kind has not gone well. I think it is just too cold here for most of them. We visited the Calvin Coolidge homestead last year. It is not far from where we live, and at a slightly higher elevation than our house, so I have to figure that if the massive rugosa rose bush next to their preserved house can thrive, so can the same type of rose on our own property. Molie, you are quite right that the wading birds would dine on goldfish at your home! "Blue heron attack" is a recurring theme on the koi pond forums! I think our pool placed right next to our house and surrounded by open land is a deterrent, but there are many creatures always on the lookout for a free fish dinner. I haven't noticed birds drinking from the pool, but many insects find that the artificial lily pads and plants provide safe footing to land and drink. Of course any unfortunate enough to fall into the water will become fish food! We do also have our brook, surrounded by pussywillow bushes, so I imagine most birds find that a safer place to drink and/or bathe.

I’m back. I didn’t get a chance to take the photos I was looking for, but I’ll try again tomorrow. I was just looking back over this thread, and I see I missed some of the posts. Deanna, you asked for updates on the Amsonia. I just noticed yesterday, that it is still blooming and looking very fresh. And I’m happy to hear that your Northern Hi Lights azalea is fragrant. I’m going to keep that in mind. You have a lot of Rhododendron and Azaleas. I have very few. I should try for more. You have a sailboat - how amazing. It’s out of the water getting painted - will you be getting it back in the water this summer? That’s a nice combo with the fringed dianthus and the Geranium. I like the pink. I wish I had more geraniums. I saw an article in a garden magazine years ago of a collector of cranesbill - wow - her garden was amazing. She had all kinds of them, Tall ones too and they all mingled together really well. I haven’t seen anything like it since and I am always on the lookout for some of the varieties I remember but I haven’t seen any yet. Maybe I dreamed it. [g] My Nepeta is still blooming. It’s having a great year. Still upright in full sun. Reminds me, I have Salvia, that I just started to cut back on to allow for rebloom and I looked out the window and saw gold finches sitting on the stems and appear to be eating something. I didn’t think there could be seed right now. I didn’t know they like Salvia. That is a very pretty color on that viola. Claire, Your Hosta near your railing is getting so big. I have Geranium ‘Biolkovo’ as well. What a great, easy care plant it is. I also have ‘Karmina’ with it. They are a good combo. Yours looks so pretty with the bleeding heart. Look at how tall your foxglove look. And erect. I am going to have to take a photo of how badly rusted some of my foxglove are this year. I don’t remember having that happen before. I think one I have is ‘Snow Thimble’? I was just noticing that I have two Foxglove that are very robust with healthy foliage and one just started blooming and to my surprise it is sturdier, stockier flowers and stems. I was at the nursery where I bought them last and I spotted them there. Good thing because I couldn’t remember the name of them and really want to have more of them. It’s a Digitalis mertonensis. What a difference next to the purpurea. The foliage is completely clean, with erect flower stems, next to rusted flopped over purpurea. I’ve been noticing amazing blooms on the Kousa dogwoods in our neck of the woods. They must love all the rain. Aren’t you lucky to have daylilies that your Mom might have planted. And fragrant too. I haven’t netted my blueberries either and the birds will get them, I’m sure.

tiff - Your plants are beautiful and robust. I'll never forget your photos of gorgeous pink foxgloves, and one of a big colony of BES. You seem to have a gift for growing happy plants.

I'll have to gather seeds of the Aruncus for you. I have several babies in the yard from winter sowing seeds from that mama. :O)

Neil, That is Clematis Josephine. It never grows more than 5.5 feet and usually flowers heavily at the bottom. This year it spread the blooms. Glad to hear about the Inula!!

Pam, Colony of BES. LOL!! I culled a lot of them back and was wondering what was missing from the gardens this year as I was weeding. I'm letting them all reseed with a vengence this year!!

Lovely as always, Tiffy! Yes that looks like eryngium to me - and glad it's not Canadian thistle, which is a horrifyingly scary plant at the rate it grows! I unknowingly WSed some one year, and felt like I was dealing with Little Shop of Horrors the next.

Drippy - Thanks for the heads up on the Eryn. Looks like they are perennial and as luck would have it, they are in the right spot. (Side note - Hope the Newfie is OK with the heat in the south.)

Someone else said it first but I have to agree - your garden shouts "Happy Plants live here!!!!". Everything lush and healthy looking - boy would I love to stroll through it.

Love your rock garden of hostas, and I see some forget-me-not and dianthus. This new flowerbed I created this year back of our sunroom has become a real challenge. Planted a lot of my wintersown plants there and am having to watch them like babies. Trying to get the darn thistles not to take over the bed. I bed I dig out a dozen every other day. Have been thinking of turning that into a rock garden. Will see what happens come the early Fall when all stop blooming. I have some red bee balm, BES, shasta daisies, silene, garden phlox(that I am babying a lot)There are some painted daisies, rudbeckia with small flowers; a hardy geranium, pink campanula, October skies aster, sundrop plant that hasn't bloomed. I've probably missed a few. Lots have not bloomed yet. My daughter gave me a lot of BES plants last year and they must be in that family but are very small flowered and the leaves are not fuzzy like a normal BES usually is. Are there different varieties of BES? The shastas have not bloomed yet. That garden phlox is getting ready to bloom that I got from a plant swap in May. I can see a pink bloom starting to show. I'm fighting roots from a hugh old maple or oak tree that has been there for 30 plus years. A rock garden with drought tolerent plants might do well but would have to buy the big rocks. We'll see what happens this Fall and next Spring. Next year should be easier because all of these will be established already and won't require as much TLC.

It is a pleasure to visit your lovely gardens, tiffy. 'Josephine' is growing really nicely in that location. I have one in a pot that was a starter last year and was potted up and sunk into a holding bed for the winter. The roots are starting to come out the bottom so need to find a permanent home for her soon. On which side of the house is yours planted?

The luna moth is very beautiful. Haven't seen many moths but have lots of butterflies and dragonflies. I especially enjoy the dragonflies as they will fly near and settle so I can see the iridescence of their wings.

Please tell me the name of the plant with the stem of white blossoms next to your verbascum. Thank you.

Tiff your gardens always look beautiful. How did you contain the yarrow? I planted some a couple years ago and it's all over the place!

The Josephine is planted on the east side of the house. I find that my best Clematis grow on the east or northeast. I believe this one blooms on old wood so don't cut it back in the spring like others. Also be very patient with it. Some years it blooms heavily at the bottom so be prepared for that too. :O)

Shasta,
Not sure what is going on with this type of Yarrow. So far it is clump forming and is not running like others. I have one footing that is now 5 feet tall and as lush as can be.
