Response from Ludwig on my 'Found' bulb

I received this response (below) from Ludwig regarding my "found" bulb. NOW WHAT DO I DO?? Please advise. I have asked them if I could get it named, but if they aren't selling it and I am propagating it, can I get it named?? I have the perfect on all picked out: H. Lakstormag "Gordie"

PS...they also told me that the variety I thought was "Peppermint" is actually "Candy Cane". Very nice of them!

Hello Kristi,

About 40 years ago Ludwig breeded this variety. It doesnÂt has a name, it only was sold as striped. Probably you have the last one.

When I worked at a garden center, I would take home the throw-away bulbs in December or January. Store them in the garage at around 40 degrees, and plant them as soon as the ground thawed. They generally did fine. Daffodils, hyacinths, and crocus grew normally. Tulips would bloom normally but generally were quite a bit shorter stems than normal. In future years, growth was normal. If you can dig the ground, just go ahead and plant, they'll be fine. If not, I'd just stick them in your refrigerator or some other place that they'll stay between 32 and 40 ish, and plant first thing in spring. They'll still grow.

You can remove foliage nÂ´all, it will grow back again. Pot the bulb or plant it in the soil leaving 1/3 of it above soil level, full sun, regular watering & fertilization until the first frost blackens the foliage, when that happens trim the spent foliage and lift the bulbs. If you want those bulbs to bloom by Christmas youÂ´ll have to lift them in early September, store them dry and plant in October, they usually take about 8 weeks to bloom after being planted, donÂ´t know if it will work specifically for those bulbs you now have but with established bulbs it works. Nice finding, you just saved $120+ in amaryllis bulbs.

I am in a similar situation - 255 tulip bulbs. From online research and personal advice seeking, these will be my strategies: (1) Plant as late as possible. Mid-late October is average here in Ottawa, Canada. Early November is even safer. We have to wait until the squirrels' gathering season is over. Let them go after your neighbors' bulbs first. :) (2) Lay chicken wire on top of the entire bed. A 1" hex x 24" x 25' (50 square feet) steel chicken wire costs $9 in Rona. You can cover 100-200 bulbs with one roll. The flower will have no problem growing through the 1" hex. (3) Bury at least 6" deep. Cover the bed with mulch so the squirrels can't smell the bulbs or see the disturbed soil. (4) Delay the bird feeder to winter (and hang it far, far away from your tulip bed).

I hate to say this, but you might want to take up that landscaping fabric. Roots from your various plants will grow into it, and when weeds sprout from blown in seeds, they will root into it too, and trying to get it up after a couple of years is awful in my experience. If you search landscape fabric in many of the forums you will read a lot of opinions, mostly negative. For the future, several layers of newspaper or one of cardboard will be a better base under the mulch - will discourage perennial weeds, but not be a permanent, entangled problem under the mulch.

OK...here's the short story. Two houses down, the guy used the house to grow orchids. When he moved out, the sheetrock was green with algae. Apparently he was using the house like a green house (it was green...literally!). He moved to another location in the area, and set up proper greenhouses for his orchids. After he moved out, the house was vacant for a while. One day, I saw a bulb sitting on top of the soil. I walked over, picked it up and planted it. This is what it became. My question is....since Ludwig never named it, and they don't grow it any more....can I name it?? I don't expect to patent it...but it can't go through life as "found bulb" or "stripe". And I am cultivating it...I have 30 or more selfs from this bulb that should bloom next year. It's getting ready to bloom on 5 stalks...and I've really taken good care of it. I would love to be able to name it and Ludwig didn't really express any intrest in getting it back.

I know nothing about whether or not you can name the bulb. However, if and when you decide to sell babies, please add me to the list of people interested in purchasing.

I have no idea what kind of red tape and paperwork it takes to register a bulb... patents are expensive, copyrights are cheap... but I'm not sure which is the proper way to go... if it is not currently registered, I'm sure you could find out more about officially naming it. I would think it would take a lot of research into its history, etc... but if it's an antique variety, it's certainly worth saving and cultivating!

If you're serious about officially naming it, I'd start by finding out how the pros register their new plant material... there must be a government or official office somewhere... there must be forms to fill out, etc...

I'm not sure, but I think if you're going to sell it, profit from it, you might need to go through official channels... I know it's illegal to clone some registered plants, so at the very least, you may want to look into it further...

How exciting, though! To actually bring an antique bulb/flower back from the brink of extinction!
