Source for Amaryllis Bulbs/Seeds

Hello all,

Just wondering if anyone knows of a online company that will sell bulbs to me in Canada. I ve searched online and found quite a few but they operate in the US only.

Our garden centres here only have amaryllis bulbs in the fall.

Also does anyone know of a good source of fresh seeds? I had one pod and it seems to have aborted. I bought some on ebay but none of them have sprouted yet...it s been 2 weeks..

I could send you some seed if you like. Not sure it is all well labled but mostly crosses with PInk Suprise, Red Pearl,
and several others, probably orange souverein and maybe Exotica. My tags have a way of getting seperated from the seed before I get them started :-)

Will be having surgery to replace my knee next week so might be several weeks before I get the seed sent.

i have some seedlings that have taken a month or longer to sprout. the quickest to sprout for me was about 10 days.

i also could send you some seeds. just email me and let me know you address.

First of all, if seeds were formed, and ripened (they'd be about the size of your thumbnail, papery, and black, with a thickened center), then they most likely will germinate. If not, what have you lost by giving it a shot? Activated carbon is totally unneccessary (but you can get it in any tropical fish supply store - even Walmart, most likely); just float 'em in a bowl of water in a warm windowsill, and in a week or two they'll form a root and a green shoot. Or you can just save yourself some time and scatter them on the surface of some moist potting soil, cover lightly, and keep the whole deal warm and moist for a couple of weeks until they germinate. The only problem at that point is that you will need lots of room to grow any number of young plants to blooming size (and it takes two or three years under the best of conditions). Another note is that setting seed draws lots of energy from the bulb after flowering, so don't be suprised if that particular plant requires a season or two of recovery time with lots of water, sun, and heavy feeding before it's capable of blooming again. If bulblets form, you'll see smaller sets of leaves rising alongside the mother bulb as it grows over the summer. I wouldn't be in a hurry to detach them - they'll grow faster connected to the main bulb.

If you want to grow alot of these you need to start them in open flats. Get some plastic trays from the five and dime. You are looking for something that would double as the bottom of a cat litter box. With about a 1/2 inch wood drill bit put about 12 holes in it. Six of them on the curve of the bottom to side. This is so if sitting flat it won't fill with water. I use a compost soil with a little sand and mix 50% with miracle grow soil or peters which is sold in our area. Fill about an inch from the top and water thoroughly. Add more soil if needed to keep an inch from the top. Lay out seeds flat with about the same space as the seeds are wide. Cover with 1/4 inch of soil mix. Mist top of soil until real wet. Set in semi bright light or on porch but not full sun. After they have had three or four leaves come out strong you can gradually introduce them to more sun. Don't worry about thinning out after they start sprouting. Leave in the tray and fertilize as required. Donts soak and don't let dry out. Leave them in tray for first year, then plant them out or in pots. You will end up with over 50+ a tray and are great for starting a whole bed with one tray. Hoped that helped you some it has worked for us for years. did you know that there is a Amaryllis/Hippeastrum Forum here? there are a lot of knowledgeable people that love amaryllis there. there are quite a few places to order from. here is a list of some of the places that have been mentioned before on the amaryllis forum. it's always a good idea to check the ratings here before ordering. royal colors great place to order from - international - may take some time to receive the bulbs, but they are good quality bulbs easy to grow bulbs brent and becky's bulbs booming bulb willow creek gardens edens blooms park seed american meadows

What do you have to trade? I am checking viability of some seeds right now and may be interested, although...seeds are highly variable...you're never quite sure what you'll get! That's part of the fun! Kristi

I have nine very fat seed pods just beginning to mature. They should be ready VERY soon. They are all mixed up too...I had several reds, whites and Apple Blossoms who were all blooming at once. I'd be glad to share some if you email me your address.

On April 1, I tried floating seeds from Charisma and Exotic Star in 82 degree water (in an aquarium with heater) and I had distinct roots sprouts in four/five days. Today they are almost four inches tall and are developing their second leaves. It seems the floating is a trick to speed up the process a little. Definately worth a try if you have the space and materials!

Wow 82 degrees!! I ve got mine in a clear plastic container on a heat mat (I saw pics posted on this forum and did it just like that) but there s no way it gets that hot...I m rather surprised...I would have thought that kind of temperature would kill them...

I will not give up on the ones I ve got floating...I thought that they would sprout in a few days though...some of them have sunk to the bottom...no roots yet.

My email is: silvergirlsf@msn.com if you still want some different seeds to try. Yes, I was surprised to use water that warm but I saw the posting here, and it really seemed to speed the germination. I got a ten dollar aquarium heater just for my seeds! About 85 percent of them did germinate too. Maybe using really fresh seeds helped too? With some of my seeds from "this batch" I'll do a comparison on the same seeds using different methods for germination. My most interesting pod will be my last to mature, so I should have a good system by then! Good luck on your new adventures and endeavors!

I have found that some varieties of seed take over two weeks to germinate... I almost dumped some, but decided to leave them just to see if anything would happen... wouldn't you know, after about 2 1/2 weeks they began sprouting!

Some have sprouted within a week or so, as well... leading me to conclude it has to do with more than just environmental conditions. I believe certain varieties may just be slow starters.

I floated mine in water on a heat mat, but the water seemed a bit too warm... I placed a plastic cover between the container and mat to give it a slight buffer zone. The water seemed to cool a few degrees to a nice temperature, and I've had good germination using that set-up.

Re: Temperature of Water in which to float seeds....it has come to my attention that you probably meant 82F and not celcius? lol we use the celcius scale here...82C is almost the boiling point of water (100C)...that s why I thought that they would be killed by it! 82F on the other hand...is about 28C...just a bit higher than room temperature...a heat mat would work fine for this..

lol it s a good thing it was mentioned that it may be F and not C...I was already looking for a way to heat it up to 82C!

Also I m wondering: the seeds I bought from ebay which haven t germinated in 2 weeks have now sunk to the bottom of the container...they were floating initially...
I ve read that only the non viable ones sink...does this mean that all of these are not viable? I m going to leave them in just in case though.
