I planted a lemon tree from a seed. I went to a green house and purchased the correct potting soil for citrus and food. My plants are 2 years old and not produced so much as a flower as yet:( They are in like 6 inch pots, but planted close to the top and are now about 3 feet high. I have cut them back, severely, the first year, and this spring I have cut them back again. I have seen some post mentioning doing something with the roots, cutting the older ones off? I water them when they dry out and they get afternoon sun in the winter and are out with my hot pepper plants in the green house in the late spring and than are totally outside in the sun from July till September. I'm at a loss. What can I do to force flowering and production of a few lemons?

Hi Ana, I didn't say it was a virus, just that I would protect the wounds from a posible virus entering..It has happened to me.. Not sure what the actual problem is though...:-( You asked what we would do, or what you should do, and I would still cut off the branches, or at least seal the cracks, if big, to avoid further problems.....I hope it works out well for you..:-) Mike

I would let it do it thing. It will branch when it is ready. When it is about 5 feet tall you will need to take a bud from the top and graft it to the bottom of the tree if you ever want fruit. wood maturity is messured by the tree as the number of leaves that bud is from the roots. At 5 feet you may have a leaf node count of 100.. the leaf node count will start at 100 even though the bud has been moved to the base of the tree.

Marksgirl, Here in central Florida my lemons (Meyer) do ok in the winter. The trees have seen as low as 22 degrees and survived though they did suffer some damage. Most years we get 3-5 frosts and a couple of nights that drop down to the upper 20's and other than some tip burn tolerate it well and bear abundant fruit. The freezes seem to be much more injurious than the frost as the freezes cause the trees bark to split. The oranges are tougher and as a rule don't sustain damage. My limes on the other hand screamed and dropped dead:) Now I did not protect my trees but you can use a few misters in the branches and that will protect the tree on those cold nights from the increased warm air or if it is cold enough will wrap the tree in a blanket of ice. You can also use misters on the ground and the warmer than air water will provide some protection as the heat from the water rises. You can also plant the tree closer to the house and the house will help it some also.
