Lima x Giraffe 2010 - green jade surprise

Now hereÃ¢ÂÂs a surprise. I had one or two rather straggly Lima x giraffe last year, but they did not look anything like this - they were in-between the shape and colour of the parents, and much less interesting. This one has thrown up an almost pure white and green flower with prominent veins and just a hint of orange blush. Reminds me a bit of lemon-lime. Nice crinkly edges too - another keeper.

I realized that I didn't really answer the original question of the thread. I'm zone 9-10, SW 18. hot and dry summers, mild winters! Apologies as this is NOT the OGR forum and some of my faves are OGRs or old HTs. :) :) :) Ones I really liked this year: Lavender Lassie - I saw a charming specimin of this at Descanso Gardens that I feel in love with. It was absolutely wonderful. I bought a 2 gallon from ARE and planted at the end of 2010. She's put up at least two 5' or so canes with such beautiful clusters of blooms at the end. She seems really strong and vigorous. I can't wait to see what she does next year. La France Cl. - Just gets more beautiful and beautiful. It has some little bit of something that makes it more romantic than a typical hybrid tea to me. Mme Berard - So beautiful. Growing fast and blooming frequently. Tipsy Imperial Concubine Just a baby but keeps blooming! The blooms are such a lovely mix of colors. Sombrieul now in it's 2nd year it's really starting to throw up huge canes,... like 6 feet. I'm in love with it. It's blooms are so beautiful. They have it growing up a huge arbor at Descanso, it's to die for. So many petals... ! Duftendes Weisskirchen Planted 8/10 as a band... it's just a charming little thing. It's blooms are such a vibrant purplish hot pink. It wants to bloom all the time and just is very happy. Eden Cl. and James Galway cl both put on a LOT of growth and bloom this year (they were planted early '10) The Faun (Bossa Nova) this blooms more than anything in my yard and I love the fully double old-style blooms on it. I love the low shape of the bush. Great for a border plant so far. Archduke Charles I love you, Archduke! The blooms change color and even though it's perported to be a slow grower, I'm still getting some growth on mine. Such a charming thing. Madame Joseph Bonnaire the most beautiful creature. Threw out a couple big canes and a big root down through the pot and into the ground. A vigorous thing! Bounced back after I repotted it and I can't wait to see what it does next year after I get it in the ground. The blooms are GORGEOUS. Madame Alfred Carriere Despite being in partial shade, throwing up huge canes... can't wait to see what it does next year. Delicate beautiful flowers,... such strong growth! Dissappointments: Tiffany - an own-root since late '09... still super tiny and rather upset. Might replace it with a grafted one. William Shakespeare 2000 1 of 2 died and the 2nd one hasn't grown (both put in the ground early '10). I'll see what it does next year. Yves Paiget Had to pot because the bed wasn't ready and it outright died, almost immediately after getting it. :\

No blooming Hippeastrum here, but my deformed Schlumbergera I already wrote about on this forum is blooming again! On the first pic, there's a bulb bought as "H. reticulatum" sending up a first leaf, It's way over a year since I bought it! The leaves look more like 'Mrs. Garfield', at least the stripe is not as solid as in the "H. reticulatum var. striatifolium" pics I've seen ... sadly I don't think I will recieve blooms from this one in the near future, the bulb has shrunken too much. Also you can see my crosses from '09 but they didn't grow for some time, now they're getting new broader leaves. Most of the "Sydney x Amputo" crosses didn't made it, so I'll just regard the ones still alive as most valuable ;) And then there's my Passiflora amethystina in the back which lost a lot of leaves due to a Mealybug infestation. I had hoped for it to flower, but that'll have to wait until next year.

Thanks everyone! Yume, Graffiti and Viridi have very similar color patterns and inherited papilio's wide petalled "wings". Jungle Joy did not inherit this and has thinner petals which most probably is the reason why it is greener. It could be the cooler fall temps likewise. I will try to cross this one with Jungle Lady and hope to get more frilly petalled results with red picotee. I love them picoteed frills!

Excellent! Glad to hear that Crassula arborescens is a more thirsty variety. I am slowly planning landscaping part of my yard with succulents. Before I relandscape, I am in the process of trying out individual specimens to see what fares best in my climate. Sounds like Crassula arborescens might be a good landscape candidate. jonaskragebaer - I have to say, I know very little about Denmark. During your wet summers, how hot is it there? My (admittedly limited) trials with succulents show that it isn't the wet alone, but the wet+heat that does them in. Seems like succulents most hate the combination of high humidity combined with nighttime temps not dropping below 80 degrees F.

Amazing how different the seedlings are from the same parents. That one is amazing! Great job!

I made several Lima crosses and am just getting sprouts now. Too bad I have to wait 3 years!!!

Yes, funny how seedlings from the same parents can look so different. Growing right alongside this green jade is another from exactly the same batch, but it looks like this:

I would never be able to tell these two came from the same parents. But the green/white one is beautiful! It would be lovely if it would be able to carry these genes further!

Lima x giraffe continues to throw up surprises. It seems like there are numerous possibilities with this particular re-assortment of genes. This one had me open-mouthed when I saw it opened out one morning - like none of the others in spite of having exactly the same parents. The flower is a solid deep reddish purple with unobtrusive dark streaks, and a green throat:

I call it dark ruby. A neighbour said it reminded her of an orchid, just what I was thinking.

The scape has three flowers, and it also sort of reminds me of the three witches in Macbeth.

Dark ruby has such interesting frilly edges and shape. They do look like 3 witches now that you mentioned it :) Do you have any more siblings from this cross?

EXTREMELY nice!! If you got 3 flowers this time next time you'll get 4!! And, is this one from the same seedpod as your Green Jade? Can't wait to see the rest of them!!

Of all the various Cybister types I have made crosses with, I have yet to use LIMA, now I absolutely must - if only she will bloom! I would have to use it on/with EXOTIC STAR though as it is the best performer I have.

I've only had a couple of seedlings bloom and neither were Cybister Hyb. crosses, but were from non-Cybister types and one of them I lost the tag on! I think they may both be from the same cross, but more on that in a different post.

Back on topic, I am in awe of what the results have been from this cross. The green is perhaps my favorite, although the deep, ruby red is pretty sharp looking as well! Congrats on your work!

Wow, I would be extremely tickled if I had a flower like the first picture that doesn't really carry on the colors of the parents. That's pretty cool.
