Hippeastrum puniceum

I got seed of H. puniceum 2 and half years ago and after growing for 2 years straight it went dormant last Nov. or Dec. I was sort of surprised to see a scape forming a couple weeks ago and after breaking it off (not so smart) I put it in some water and got to see the blooms:

This is one of the true species that is easy to grow...and by that I mean you can do it in zone 6 without a greenhouse....if you need more than that you can not in my opinion describe it as easy.....it also flowers from a bulb that is not even 2 inches in diameter so a little fella :o) Dan

Real Nice Dan. The size, being quite small, sould make them a favorite of 'window gardeners'. If memory serves me, did I send you a bulb or bulbils of my puniceum a year or so ago? My pot of puniceum is showing 2 scapes. The first should be opening by the weekend. I hope they look as nice as yours. My clones remain evergreen in Houston. I haven't tried from seed. For me, they grow kinda slow. did you get the seed from Telos?

Hi Pat, You sent me some sort of F1 hybrid that you had indicated came from the place in Ohio originally (drawing a blank on the name right now). I am certain that this F1 has H. striatum parentage as it offsets by producing pups from within the bulb tunic like crazy (same as striatum does, but my puniceum does not produce offsets the same way as it is more conventional)...litterally dozens per year....this has now been growing totally evergreen for over 2 years since you sent it and the original bulbs have gotten very large (for the type), but it has never flowered.....I am tempted to force dormancy to see if I can get a scape on it. Any ideas how I can make this little fella you sent me flower??

I think that puniceum and striatum should be on everyones grow list as a species for their collections as they are truly easy by my definition....as I said, no GH allowed for that definition to be valid and as you have shown you can even cross them with conventional hybrids if you want to play that game!! I also find the Hadeco site annoying, but not solely for the slow downloads. What really gets me is they donÂt list or link any distributors in the US, and I havenÂt been able to get my hands on a good number of their cultivars that I covet. IÂd love to see a site (or a book) that clearly enumerates the defining characteristics of the various cultivars. I seem to recall a Veronica Read site that basically covered this information (though not all varieties had images), but it appears to have been taken down....

Hi Folks, I have all of the seeds sent out at this time. I will post again in the Fall for homes for offsets. Hi Hans-Werner, So true, the flowers are not as exciting as some. They make up for the lack of style with great vigor and a free blooming habit.Twice a year is quite common for them and without any special prompting. The offsets are very interesting,some forming on rhizomes and some bursting from the side of the bulb. My hope is to put puniceum pollen on papilio and then attempt to breed the results back to papilio. If I can retain the papilio face but increase the vigor and ease of blooming it could be a very nice thing :) Lora

Glad you liked the pics....it is amazing how well the colors turn out just under a 400W MH bulb.....it makes it so you can shoot indoors and get a decent pic!!

I think puniceum is quite common so you can likely track one down pretty easy rather than fiddling with seed like I did....I just wanted to make absolutely sure I had the real deal so got seed from Brasil :o) Dan

It's awesome! What a pretty little flower! The nice even color and the green eye make it one I really like! Easy to grow, huh? I'll keep my eyes open for a bulb or seeds...
