Have H. puniceum seed !

Hi Folks,

I have made a recent purchase from a very generous person who included a pack of 63 seeds along with my bulbs. In the interests of spreading the species around I am offering the seeds to those people that live very far away from Indiana. I do not need anything in trade,I simply want these seeds to get to people with an interest in preserving species.

For people living more domesticly, I have a large number of offsets potted up and I will make them available this Fall when they are better established and the weather cools down.

So, please email me with your address and the number of seeds you can handle. I hope to be sending them out July 5th but that is not a cutoff date,just the next time I can get to the post office.

Hallo Lora
I would like very much to obtain some seeds of Hippeastrum puniceum. On Hippeastrums I have a lot of seedlings and some hybrids, but not yet the original species. If you would be interested on alpin flower-seeds or on seeds of wild-flowers of the fields or of rare vegetables perhaps I can do you a kindness.

Hi Folks,
I still have 20 seeds left :)
The next batch will go in the post Tuesday.
Hans-Werner, I know they will cross with papilio but I don't know if the results fall in the direction you are looking.

Hi Pat, You sent me some sort of F1 hybrid that you had indicated came from the place in Ohio originally (drawing a blank on the name right now). I am certain that this F1 has H. striatum parentage as it offsets by producing pups from within the bulb tunic like crazy (same as striatum does, but my puniceum does not produce offsets the same way as it is more conventional)...litterally dozens per year....this has now been growing totally evergreen for over 2 years since you sent it and the original bulbs have gotten very large (for the type), but it has never flowered.....I am tempted to force dormancy to see if I can get a scape on it. Any ideas how I can make this little fella you sent me flower?? I think that puniceum and striatum should be on everyones grow list as a species for their collections as they are truly easy by my definition....as I said, no GH allowed for that definition to be valid and as you have shown you can even cross them with conventional hybrids if you want to play that game!! Hi, I am brand new on this site, I would love some of your herbs and mints. I would be happy to send a lot of orange daylilys, I dont know the name, but they are big double orange flowers, I also have black hollyhock seeds,and I dont know if the autumn joy sedum is seeding yet but I can check tomorrow. or dig a small clump. I understand your not sending until recieving, seems fair..

I am indeed sorry -
IF this species only had at least ONE of the following features:
pink or burgundy red
white ligaments which stretch towards the tips of the segments
ruffled edges
ability of generating 6 flowers/stem
or.. even ONLY
unusual flower shape for example a loooong trumpet
THEN I would be HOT to obtain some of these seeds.
Nevertheless thank you very much for this generous offer.
That is great - and it is rare.

Lora, I emailed you. I'd love to try if you have any left. The pink cross seeds you sent me a while back are all doing great. Thanks again for your generosity!

So true, the flowers are not as exciting as some. They make up for the lack of style with great vigor and a free blooming habit.Twice a year is quite common for them and without any special prompting. The offsets are very interesting,some forming on rhizomes and some bursting from the side of the bulb. My hope is to put puniceum pollen on papilio and then attempt to breed the results back to papilio. If I can retain the papilio face but increase the vigor and ease of blooming it could be a very nice thing :) Lora
