Yes, many! Its almost impossible to find a selection at a nursery with such features. They also are many seedless selections too, (and thornless + seedless). Some selections are 'Moraine', 'Shademaster', ÂImperial and 'Skyline.'

A google search is all you need to find a vendor, plus plug the cultivar names into the search engine to get more information on the specific selection- there is plenty out there. I must admit my favorite is 'Moraine'

I came across one last year while replacing a fence. It had about a 6 inch base and no sign of thorns so I left it and used it as a post.
I've noticed that almost any nursery offers them. As for the bean pods cattle and sheep love em.

Even before the collapse of the industry here in GA (drought) you couldn't find a honey locust in nurseries here for anything.

I have Sunburst and it doesn't have thorns. I got a badly shaped trunk though. I should have looked at it many times before I selected it. :(

They're not popular here either. I can't say I have ever seen one at a nursery. There is a wild one up the road from me that is semi-thornless. It has thorns on the upper branches, but none on the trunk.

I've seen some planted around at office parks but no where near what you see these other posters are. They're the willow oak of the midwest.

Thank you all for the info. I will digest it this weekend. What I would like is a shorter locust with out thorns and with pods that can be used for animal forage. I will keep looking. Thanks Dustin

dustin_nevadanorth, if animal forage is what you want, you should track down the selection 'millwood', a variety selected for exactly the traits you want - Extra heavy pod production of very sweet pods for livestock food on thornless trees. Problem is, I donÂt know where you could get one.

Plug in "Gleditsia triacanthos milwood" in google to find out a little more about the selection. "Honey locust millwood" does not turn up many matches.

Cows do love those pods! I collected a bag of them to feed to my friends cattle and they pinned me up against the fence trying to get that bag.

fledgeling, I have a 3.5 yr-old Millwood x thornless Honeylocust (from OIKOS) now ~14' tall. This spring it was covered w/hanging, fragrant flowers, but it doesn't have another pollinator nearby, so no pods.

Hidden Springs Nursery has a couple grafted varieties that suppose to be superior in pod production.

Thanks for the info you all. Are Honey Locust self fertile or do they need another type to pollinate for pod production?

Dustin, I'm not sure. Most trees need a pollinator, but some can be self-fertile (the resulting seeds are often infertile). Maybe my 'Millwood' didn't have any male flowers -- male/female flowers on this tree are hard to tell apart.

"Podless" trees are all male... perhaps the reverse is true for the super heavy poding selections? I dont know from firsthand experience because there is no shortage of pollinator trees in my area.

no specifics on this cultivar that I could locate species height 60-80 feet variable spread shorter range in drier climates such as mine and yours um casts light shade that does not inhibit growth of vegetation and grass under it i have no idea about your rainfall, climate and soil. This tree may or may not be a good choice for you.

quirkyquercus, according to fledgeling, I was imagining the flower-smell, but my imagination suggested they smell like Black locust -- a vanilla-like scent. I did have to get my nose up to them...

Dustin, what you want to do should be possible w/at least 2 or more of OIKOS's trees. Suggest you email Ken at OIKOS w/your detailed questions (he responds quickly). These would be small mail-order trees, but very fast growing & mine flowered heavily the 4th growing season in the ground, so not too long to wait. HLocust in dry NV would prb'ly stay med size -- 30-40' tall & wide after ~30 yrs.
