yellow maple leaves

Today, we went to Plainfield, IL to help a friend lay down the sod. I saw a lot of beautiful maple trees. All the leaves were all goldish yellow. I didn't see any touch of red, nor orange. It was pure yellow. It was gorgeous!

What type of maple trees are they? And there there any maple tree that turns goldish yellow that is not wide(maybe 20' wide is acceptable when mature)?

I know that shantung maple can turn pure yellow but I doubt that's what you saw. I've seen southern sugar maple turn pure yellow over here in Texas.

I'm going to take pics tomorrow. I saw a street about half a mile from our house full of maples with color yellow leaves. The one I saw today where at Route 47. I can't believe the weather tomorrow, 72F for November?!

Unless the spot with the tree is especially prone to waterlogging, I doubt the wet summer and fall had an affect on the tree color. I was in NJ a few weeks ago and saw plenty of beautiful Red Maples. Now, the caveat is, Red Maple is one of those trees with fascinating genetic variation. Some trees regularly turn glorious red, while others are always yellow. Its just wierd like that ;-) If it was red last year, then something else (besides the weather) is likely affecting it. If it was yellow last year, it was probably mislabelled. I suppose it could just not like the surrounding soil too...

It could just be yearly changes...for something that established, keep an eye on it...don't freak out the first year. As for the Mycor. & fertilizer...rates of fert. for older, estabished trees can be a pain to determine(a lot of rates for different type of landcape fert. are all the same...they do not make a lot of sence and it seems most copy each others rates). Yes, fertilizing now and into the fall can allow nutrient loading for next year, to much of the wrong kind CAN set the plant up for winter injury (dependent on where you live, your winters, length of growing season, etc.). The fertilizer really does have a long shelf life if yoy keep it dry and sealed away from moisture. As for the Mycorr.....if you have it, use it...it has a shelf life MUCH shorter. The top 12"-18" of the soil is where "it is all happening", moisture uptake, oxygen exchange, nutrient uptake, etc(below that is mostly storage and support)......keep any augered holes at about 12"...the more holes, the better overall coverage. I honestly do not believe in its use for this kind of situation, but if you have it, use it.

Don't know how, or where, you're watering, but the tree isn't getting enough of it. Need to get water into the original rootzone. To do so, you can build a 2-inch tall dike at the edge of the rootball, then fill the basin once or twice every day. Hope you also pre-soaked the planting hole before setting th tree in place. And I hope you also made certain the rootball was completely moist at planting time. If not, keep that in mind for the next tree you put in.

At this time of year, perfectly normal. Probably the worst time of year you could select for tree planting. Your tree has transplant shock. Just keep it properly watered and you should be OK, providing the rootball itself was thoroughly hydrated before planting. If not, I'd dig, rehydrate properly, then replant. If your current weather is warm and dry, I'd bump up that watering frequency to at least 2 times a week, soaking the planting area thoroughly and deeply each time. Next time, do NOT plant trees in August, do NOT amend the planting hole (whatever soil comes out goes back in without additions) and do NOT add bonemeal or any other fertilizer at planting time. Nurseries often give out very poor and outdated planting advice.

Living in Chicago as well, you probably either saw a Norway Maple, or a Silver Maple. Both change leaves later than most other trees and both are in the process of changing now across Chicago.

Norway Maples are usually more round or oval shaped, unless they are very old (like 70 years) in which they can be much more broad at the top of their crown. Norway Maples also have much larger leaves in general.

Silver Maples are more upright in shape and can have a V shape. Silver maples grow much faster and can get taller, especially a tree in the 20 to 50 year old range. Silver maples also have deeply forked leaves.

yes jlaitar, those are the same color of trees I have seen. So they are Norway maple! It's really gorgeous! Is there any maple tree like that but not round and changes yellow in fall?

Shantung maple can have brillant yellow fall color without the invasive of Norway Maple. It is more of upright up and looks kinda similar to Norway.

There are several forms of Norway maple, including a few fastigate varieties.

Pretty much around Chicago the two most common maples that turn yellow in the fall are the Norway and Silver Maples. Norway Maples have better color, since Silver Maples can be hit of miss. Silver Maples do grow much faster than a Norway, however their wood is weaker because of this. Norway Maples, similar to Red and Sugar Maples have a rounded crown, especially when young. However around North Central College in Naperville there are are some very old Norway maples that are more upright, and have a broad crown at the top, similar to an oak. They are in the 60-70 foot range. And considering they are infront of houses that are 80-100 years old, that is probably how old they are too.

Also Norway Maples can be invasive if in the wild. I wouldn't worry about that too much if you have one infront of your house. I have a Norway Maple in front of my house and every spring I have a couple baby trees growing in my yard or flower garden and I just pull them out. It's been a good tree for me.
