Don't anymore. I only trade or harvest my own. That being said, I do love Select Seeds - the catalog is awesome.

Looking at that list, you could say I have just a tiny addiction, huh? Basically, I buy from whoever has the best price on whatever it is that I happen to be looking for at that moment. Does that make me a "seed floozy"? LOL!

My favourite place to get seeds is from trades. Other gardener are just so generous and kind and I always hope that they feel the same way I do when they receive my envelopes.

Other than that, I really like to order from Gardens North for unusual seeds. Seems every year I always grow something from them which becomes a mainstay in the gardens.

Last year I ordered from e-bay and was quite happy. The quantity of seeds was questionable, but the germination was spectacular so in the end it paid off. :O)

The mailbox! Last Fall when I participated in a round robin exchange each month, I received hundreds of packets of seed from GW gardeners in exchange for mine. Much more interesting seed selection than you can buy. But it involves some labor to collect, dry, package and mail seed.

I also ordered just a couple of things. The sites I used were Seedman.com, ebay.com, valueseeds.com. Happy with all of them!

My main supply of seeds is NARGS- North American Rock Garden Society- I usually get first and second rounds of it and pretty much receive everyting I wanted.
I love JL Hudosn, seedsman, always try to order from them- great variety and catalog is fun to read, no pics.
Garden North is another of my favs- great rare plants, woodlands, natives.
Hardyplants has been great for me but last year some people were upset since they took their sweet time with order deliveries- mind you, everyone I know did received their seeds with some nice bonuses but waiting was looong... still I will be ordering from them in future.
Summer Hill and Swallowtail are great companies to look for excellent seeds and germination.
As many WS with few years of growing I really do not need any more seeds as my suburban garden plot is full to the brims. Thankfully , my neighbor's garden still have some bare spots so next year I will concentrate on more sun loving plants to help fill her garden. I did participate on seed exchange and have to say all my experience was excellent- people are generous, have various many many seeds and I pretty much found everything I was really lasting after on seed exchange and that is saying something as I usually last only after some rare, weird and unknown plants ;) Even impatiens namchabarvensis which I initally ordered from Secret Seeds, UK- PITA with those overseas regulations and customs, I had found from Susan in California and have several seedlings getting ready to bloom in my garden.

Burpee, Swallowtail, T&M and Seeds Trust. Also American Meadows, but the last mix I planted either had too much grass seed or it was in the soil. I like their regular forget-me-not (very tidy), got a ton of the chinese ones in a 1/4# bag. They do self seed and could become a problem.

I saved some alyssum and marigolds I especially liked, marigold were spectacular the first year of saving, but subsequent years they have gone downhill, alyssum doesn't seem as robust, collected those from one plant that self-seeded and was great.

I also got some on ebay but don't think I will any more unlees I can't find them anywhere else and willing to gamble. Also some exotic ones from somewhere that once I got them and saw how you have to baby them, didn't want to bother.

I've never traded yet partly because I'm afraid they won't bloom true and partly because I'm not sure they are what I want and probably don't have any people would want to trade for.

My favorites are Garden's North, Swallowtail and JL Hudson. I won't purchase from Parks, T&M or Value Seeds anymore since the germination rates seem to be consistently low.

As with most my favorite has been trades! (I loved running to the post office to send and receive). J.L. hudson Seedsman is my all time favorite place for seeds, E-bay is fun (but I am not so patient for auctions), Theres a place here in Michigan called English Gardens and they have a wonderful selection of seeds!

lets see, i ordered from gurney, summer hill seed, rare seed, i will never order from gurney and rare seed again, took too long and they never let me know when they were going to push my orders back, i had to get online to find that out, summer hill emailed me to let me know every step of the way what they were doing, sent bonuses and a letter, i'm in love with that company!! i have reordered again and will order only thru them. :')) i absolutely love their selections and their germination is great!! they also sent directions on how they do their things to get the seeds to grow. gotta love that!! LOL ~ Medo

Baker Creek and we now sell Botanical Interest seeds at work and I love them. They have a good variety and we can keep ordering more and more...and we have a big back stock of good seeds to winter sow.
I am hoping to be the first store in the USA to proudly display "THESE SEEDS ARE GREAT FOR WINTER SOWING...ASK ME MORE" on the top of the seed rack this fall and winter!!

Best overall value & quantity of seeds?

Fedco - very high seed count and germination at a low cost, mainly for the vegetable garden, free shipping with a set $ amount of order

JLHudson - also high seed count & germination, good cost and low shipping compared to others

Also like:
Diane's Flower Seeds - great quality and good cost
Swallowtail - a little more pricey but has some items with high seed count and a lot of great varieties

Trades are also great, you can find a lot of seeds not offered commercially, esp. natives

I forgot about Dianne's Seeds! You get tons of seed for your money and germination was very good.

I've never received "bad" seeds from any of them, and the customer service at all three is absolutely great. Plus, if they're out of something or there's going to be a delay in processing your order, they let you know right away.


Several years ago (somewhere in between '99 - '02, I think) I placed an almost-$90 order with Gurney's and made the huge mistake of paying by check. Well, they cashed my check in record time but I never received a single plant nor seed. For weeks I tried emailing and phoning (no answer). Eventually I read that they'd filed for bankruptcy.


To make matters worse, they now have the gall to send me several of their catalogues each year.
