Comments (5)I've gone and checked IDs quit a few times after disagreeing with captions on photos. Sometimes I'm right, sometimes I'm wrong and sometimes I find out there are other things with the same common name so that probably means I am wrong to say the caption is wrong :) All in all, it's a good learning experience for me....but what about the person who doesn't recognize the error and perhaps learns the wrong thing? I remembered the post awhile back about an ad with peppers and salsa. Funny part is that I remembered they planted seeds wrong and recalled nothing about the wrong variety of plant. When I found the old post both errors were mentioned. Interesting how different things stick with different people. Could be that I know more about planting peppers and less about identifying various varieties. BTW, were the "farmers" picking potatoes off the plants like one would harvest tomatoes or were they individually digging them from underground? And maybe this is the time to admit to some educational fraud on my part. We had a demonstation potato plot that was to be available to visitors to dig up potatoes during a two day festival. We left a volunteer in charge the first day with directions that visitors could dig up half the rows and she should limit each person to one shovelful. Well, half way through the day she reported that ALL the potatoes were harvested. She said everyone loved digging them and she did not want to tell them to stop. Hmmm, maybe she missed something in the directions. Oh, well, what to do? After visitors left that day a couple of us went and staked out several rows and BURIED the already dug potatoes and pulled some of the dead top growth off the compost pile and spread it over the rows. The next day visitors were able to dig pototoes...again...with a law-and-order type volunteer in charge. The plot lasted for the whole day :) Here is a link that might be useful: link to original discussion...See MoreMore plants to trade!
Comments (6)Hi, i am interested in your Hoyas (i've never grown those before) and your orchids. I have: 2 Lychee tree seedlings - I got these in a trade last year and they just don't seem happy in my hanging basket with 2 epis. I overwintered it in my basement and i don't think it was ideal for this tropical tree). I don't know what variety they are just Lychee. I guess they are about 4" high. I also have dwarf cavendish bananas. and if i can find a small sasafrass seedling i can send it, i have to check -- i know I have 2 but they are huge - like 4' tall and they do not like to be transplanted (i read) and it would also be too hard to dig these up. I may have smaller ones around i have to look around the yard. (My neighbor just asked me for a cutting of this tree and I thought, who would want a sasafrass tree? But they sure smell yummy when you rub the bark and pull up the roots....See MoreWhat Host/Nectar Plants Are You Wintersowing?
Comments (2)Sandy, for gosh sakes, we need to come up with some new body armor for you! Bless your heart! That must really be painful. Yeah, I thought I should probably fridge the passion vine seeds in order to get enough cold, and make a note on my calendar when to remove them from the fridge, or I will for sure forget. Thanks for the tips on the Caelsapinia and the Amorpha, too. I swear I tried Amorpha a few years back and got nothing. I wintersowed it, too. Folks on the Ok Gardening forum were discussing poppies and most threw their seeds on top of the snow so that when the snow melted they would sink to the soil and germinate. I did wintersow Larkspur one year and planted it out when it was about 4 or 5" high, and it did fine for me. Is Candlestick Cassia the same as Senna alata? If so, I just direct sowed it at the same time I did the Tropical milkweed and it came up before the milkweed did. Very easy from direct sowing the seed. I have tons of Verbena bonariensis that has germinated on the ground and the cold is not bothering it at all either. I am concerned about some of my borderline plants that don't reseed, like my Lantana 'Miss Huff', my Mexican Petunias, my fennels, etc. Do you want to try some of the Salvia subrotunda? It is supposed to reseed, and gets pretty big with red blooms on 18" wands. Let me know. Am also expecting seed of Salvia regla another reseeding red salvia. Susan...See MoreSasafrass Tree
Comments (5)Most sassafras grows in bush form and colonizes from root shoots, Susan, so yours will do fine. It's rare to find a big sassafras tree - in my area, if one takes on tree form, the tree will usually die after it gets to be about 25' or 30' tall and then grows back again from the root. My neighbor had one big sassafras tree - would you believe he cut it down for furniture wood? MissSherry...See Morerusty_blackhaw
