Bamboo in Knoxville

I am moving to Knoxville TN this summer from Michigan. just wondering what zone are you in and what is the best boo for your area. Thanks.

I'm 120 miles N.E. of Knoxville, maybe a zone cooler. Most around here grow Yellow Groove. I'm trying a few other kinds, time will tell.
Asheville isn't far from Knoxville- 4th Annual Bamboo Festival-July 10-11, 2010-Asheville, NC. If you are that close this is a must go event.

Well, it turns out Nandina is somewhat invasive in Tennessee according to TN-EPPC. It's listed as a level 2 invasive. I was surprised because I have never seen a seedling pop up where it wasn't planted. I frequently hike in a number of types of natural area and have never seen one growing wild in open areas or wooded areas. I also notice that it's one of the few plants listed on TN-EPPC's site without a distribution map. Most of the plants listed on TN-EPPC's list are literally all over the place. It may be that Nandinas are invasive in other parts of the state, or maybe they are just starting to show invasive potential here. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Diggingthedirt, I want to address two things you wrote above. First, if a plant is invasive at a certain location, it would be very unusual not to see reproduction at that site over many years. I understand that it may be very hard to judge the invasive potential by only looking at a limited area or by only looking in a certain type of growing environment (i.e. a regularly mowed yard), but on a large farm with multiple types of growing environments (a yard, a hay field, unmowed/uncleared areas, flower beds, etc.) over a period of many years, it would be hard to imagine an invasive plant (invasive at that location) would not show considerable reproduction. Secondly, while reproduction from seed is the primary vector for many or most invasive plants to spread, it is certainly not the only factor. A plant's overall rate of increase in the environment has to be taken into consideration. Vegetative reproduction (i.e. suckering) is a factor in evaluating invasive plants. In my post above however, I was obviously not claiming suckering as a reason for thinking that Nandinas were invasive. The suckering I witnessed, while annoying in a flowerbed, did not rise to the level of invasive reproduction.

Interesting. So I have been watching the fruity one for 3 years now, and it seems to have that yellowish tinge every year. I just thought it was its natural color. It does seem to have a lighter colored leaf even in summer. Below are some pix I've taken at different times of year. (Yes, I'm obsessed with the stupid tree :-). We did have a dry late summer, maybe that contributed. Hello Heide: I planted Golden Bamboo a few yrs. ago as a privacy screen. Yes, it is attractive. BUT!....... It is extremely invasive. It will send runners in every direction--and yes, it could get 20ft runners, though I have not YET dealt with that. This will help you...why don't you go to the "Bamboo Forum" and search "invasive bamboo", "golden bamboo" etc., and read some of the threads--you'll get a good education about what to watch out for with "running" bamboo. Some Do's & Don'ts to be aware of. I have kept it "contained" and growing in the direction I want it to, by either mowing over or hand cutting of the unwanted new shoots that push up through the ground. This is one method you can utilize. Importantly, we are able to mow the grass on our neighbor's side, where there are certainly bamboo shoots coming up as we speak--and this is about 12ft from the "mother" clump. So, at this point, because WE can eradicate it from their yard, I don't have angry neighbors. I can't assume my neighbors like GB as much as I do! However, if you want to be very careful, putting in a proper bamboo root barrier or planting it in a container are your best options. But note, even the runners can grow over the top of a barrier. As far as digging it up, transplanting it, etc., Golden Bamboo is pretty darn indestructable! To help you, please refer to the link I've included. Should answer most of your questions. I live an hour south of Knoxville.

I collected my Yellow Groove from a feral stand (a very old hotel site, the hotel was long gone). It is a very strong grower, tall rather than dense- DEFINITELY NEEDS A ROOT BARRIER TO KEEP CONTAINED. Oh, and the snow bends it down too much. I don't like it.

I see Japanese Arrow bamboo used a lot for landscaping around here (especially at the fancy riverfront homes that have neighbors too close). I like it. Makes good garden stakes. Very dense. It does spread but is one of the easiest to keep contained.

I have also collected Golden bamboo in the area. Mine has remained small and clumping- but it's under a very large pecan tree.

A local stand of blue-grey Henon flowered and died some five years back I guess. It's very large and vigorous.

Moso is too tender (mine froze back three years in a row and finally died). Madake I love- the dense wood holds a snow load well. Slow growing but has a character about it. You would probably have to buy it though.

There's a very large stand of some type of super large timber bamboo along some railroad tracks along Hwy 11 (called Kingston Pike in Knoxville),in Mcdonald- two hours south. I have considered stopping and asking the owner about them. Actually I've seen a few other odd types around here as well (besides our native type).

Just my own comment about rhizome barrier -- it's not the only way to keep Yellow Groove (or any other runner) contained. Some would argue it's not the best either.
