Well, dark green and very full narrows it down to 200-300 species! It's almost certainly a runner, whatever it is. You can rhizome prune with a sharp shovel once or twice a year all along the fence line, but you can't plant it so close to the fence you don't have room to work. You can also trench down 30" along the fence line and install a product called bamboo barrier, which usually stops the rhizomes. Sorry, there's no magic solution.

If I get a runner type, I plan on planting it in a large (10g or larger) plastic pot with only a drain hole in the bottom. Then plant the planter in the ground.

Kelly, its impossible to be sure as Kudzu said, but considering your zone and that your getting large quantities of it- it is likely one of the most commonly found- Phyllostachys aureosulcata. That's assuming the height you describe is not representative of a long established stand from which these divisions were taken, but merely what was considered conveniently transportable. Anyway, if you look at the canes you will find periodic yellow indented channels- hence the common name "Yellow Groove Bamboo". Also, if you have enough of the stuff, you will likely find some canes that have kinked back and forth near their bases.
It's just a wild guess, though-
if these things don't apply then it is definitely something else.
If it IS something else- you should consider yourself VERY VERY lucky to have a slightly less common bamboo fall into your lap in copious quantities. That is not to say that Yellow Groove is anything to sneeze at though.

Planting a container of bamboo with a drain hole is not a longterm containment plan. The rhizomes will escape from the drain hole(s) sooner or later. In addition, having a plant like bamboo in a container also affects the health of the plant because it interferes with the flow of subsurface moisture, and it will get rootbound very fast. So you have the worst of all worlds: a plant that doesn't do as well as it should and that also escapes the container you thought was a barrier. The only reason I can think of to bury a pot of bamboo is if I was planning on moving within a year and wanted to be able to more easily transplant.

I was thinking of using a pot about 30 inches in diameter, and 24 inches deep. I have read other posts that imply the rhizomes only go to about 12 inches and would be unlikely to go through a hole 24 inches deep, then burrow up to the surface.

Chuck, based on the little I know it does seem your plant is ultimately going to suffer with an artificial moisture barrier.
And IF a rhizome is going to burrow that deep and resurface, it will ONLY be because the container gave it no other options. That's not to say that it will, but only that you will be increasing its motivation if such a thing is possible.
Besides, if you only want a patch of bamboo as big around as a 10 gallon bucket, that should amount to VERY LITTLE annual root pruning.
