It shouldn't take long. Usually by the time the seedlings are a couple of inches tall you can begin to clearly see their markings. I've grown mixed batches of huechera and huecherella and I am quite delighed with the plants. They're all charming and some are simply visually stunning.

you will see coloring in couple of months. I had some gems and some regulars, I like all of them. Grown metallica as well, same result.

I tried two containers of heuchera seeds this year. They were a bit late to sprout but I was pleased with the number of seedlings..then the slugs set in! They had a field day. I managed to save 5 seedlings from one containers and 1 from the other.

Brent.... argh, I feel your pain! I've brought my babies inside now because if the slugs eat them (as they've eaten more than half my plants this year) I'll go completely demented! Strange, isn't it, that they eat the seedlings, because the mature plants don't seem to tempt them at all.

Linda... nice picture, thank you. So far my seedlings are only maybe half an inch tall, but one of them is darker than the others. I love the variation you get by growing from seed. Now I'm waiting for sprouts from the Palace Purple tray, which I've heard comes fairly true.

It is not the best coloration of the plant but the one I had picture of, and yes, they do come in some funny variegations. Take a look at tiarellas as well- I had some interesting leaf forms and variegation on them as well.
I grow heucheras and tiarellas as long as possible in the pots, placed on high shelves until they can fend for themselves. I find they do ok for longish time in 72 cell trays- root system is not robust.

I WS two packages of heuchera 'Palace Purple' and had no germination on either one. Still haven't dumped the containers yet .... but their days are numbered.
