Cheap/Free Raised Circular Beds
Comments (57)Stone and concrete walls look nice but they create a problem around the edges. You can't mow clear up to the wall so you need to string trim. You can't get the grass or weeds that collect in the crevices so never get a good clean look. I solved this with roofing shingles. I removed the grass all around my circular bed the width of the roofing shingles. Then I lifted up each rock and slid the roofing shingle underneath about 2", overlapping as I went around the circle. It took an afternoon but it was so worth it! Now the mower wheel glides right over the roofing shingles and no string trimming needed. Just circle your bed with the mower in one pass and that's it, a crisp clean look. I used green roofing shingles and the grass grows right up to the edge and blends in. Can't tell you how many people have said, Wow, that's a great idea! I used landscape pins to hold the shingles in place. Because they are so thick I made the puncture holes with an awl. These roofing shingles have been in place for 3 summers and no problems. I bought mine at Home Depot because I wanted the green color but I imagine if you see roofers putting on a new roof you could ask if they have any new shingles left over you would be happy to haul them away. I don't recommend using used shingles because they are all ripped up and falling apart. Seems to me I paid about $16 for my package of green shingles and I bet they will be there for years to come. Has anyone else done this? Hope the idea helps. Trowelgal of Tina...See MoreCheap Mulch
Comments (11)I've been using fresh wood chips for years and have never had any problems. You can always add nitrogen-rich fertilizer, but I rarely even do that. I've let some sit in the driveway a year or so and wound up with wonderful compost full of fat worms, but I figure it might as well compost in the garden. I use a thick layer of pine chips on paths, then scrape it off into the garden when it decomposes, but it will last several years. I use hardwood in the garden beds, with or without nitrogen, because it breaks down faster. Just DON'T use it close to the house where termites may take up residence....See MoreFree Mulch?
Comments (24)the landfill mulch is highly variable and sometimes you do get oddball things in it (nails, small plastic toys, shreds of bags) but for the most part it's fine. It varies depending on what's going into it- time of year, any natural disasters, etc. Best batch i've gotten was after Fran- very woody but made great mulch, and very little 'extras'. It's a good deal for what you get- and you can watch b/c sometimes they run buy one get one free deals- but you have to make 2 trips in one day for it to hold true. If you're in fuquay and are willing to drive a little bit, there's a place in garner you an load up for free. It's lakeside daylily farm on 50, right up n garner. He lets any of the tree contractors around dump their shredded/chipped stuff instead of paying to dump it at the waste management and has an enormous pile. If the gate's open, it's free for the taking and the gate's usually open. You can back right up to the pile in numerous spots and it only takes 15-20 mins for 2 to load a pickup truck full. Again, variable textures depending on what the material is and how long it's been there, but look around and you'll find something you can use. There's a smaller pile of well rotted stuff but you have to load that onto tarps or in cans b/c you can't get the trucks close enough. Hope that helps!...See MoreThis saturday: free mulch in Denver.
Comments (2)I'm going to link the thread I posted a week ago here since it has a link to the City of Denver site with all the info. They're selling compost too. To answer the question you asked on that thread, Azura, with our alkaline soils out here, using pine byproducts shouldn't cause any problems at all that I know of. I'm glad to get pine needles along with my neighbor's maple leaves in fall, 'cause I hope they might add just the tiniest little bit of acidity to the compost. I don't test anything, so I don't know for sure, but I doubt that the small quantity I get does much at all! And, yes, any mulch will help keep the weeds down somewhat. The thicker, the better!
