What is this creature and what do I do with it? DH found him in the veggie garden.

Parsley worm - the caterpillar of the black swallowtail moth:

They nibble a little on parsley and related plants but generally don't do much damage. They are a nice bright garden visitor. Love those stripes.

That cute guy will turn into this beauty!
I want some too so I sowed a lot more dill and fennel this year...and I let milkweeds grow. I'll look for prettier Asclepias later. :-)

I already checked into how to separate isopods from the non-worm compost for exactly that reason. It seems easy enough. In the worm bin, I've noticed they tend to loiter near the surface; they aren't really found in the casts. I'm wondering if simply crumbling the stuff while applying to spot and pick out the odd stray will be sufficient. Alternatively, I might try a quick dunk to send them running for fear of drowning. I could try the spread and sun dry approach that's supposed to work with regular compost, but isn't it bad to let your vermicompost dry out?

It would be very helpful to know WHERE you live, Timothy Lewis. This is definitely a burrowing spider of some sort, but knowing where you live will help narrow things down. It appears to be a Lycosid(wolf spider), though I can't see enough of its "face" to determine if it's a true spider or a Mygalamorph, the primitive group of spiders that includes tarantulas. Knowing where you live can rule out the latter, since the range of Mygalamorphs with this coloration is limited in the US.

Omgosh, U have sprouts!! If I were u , I would Cut the rotting parts of the tubers out & get some root stimulator. Bonide root & grow or Fertilome root stimulator are the bomb! Without it I wouldn't have as many plants as I do now it's a plant savor! U can Pot up the sprouts w/ what's left of the tuber ( after cutting out the mushy stuff) into a light organic potting Mix & water well w/root stimulator ( follow directions on back) I planted 42 tubers this year - out of 42 , 4 of them rotted -lucky ducky barely had ANY tuber left but I was able to save them all bc of the root stimulator:) :) while the remaining good parts of the tuber slowly start to rot again - I'm guessing- it fed the sprouts until they were able to grow new roots. After a week & half or so - I went & carefully dug up the sprouts to see that the rest of the tuber rotted around the sprout but the sprouts grew their own roots- whoopie!! I was able to save jens wedding, lucky ducky, new dimension & blue bayou by doing this :) if it's really hot right now where u live, I would keep them in shady spot until they root. I also used smaller pots so I didn't rot the remaining parts of the tuber faster than it could grow roots & so I could also keep an eye on the water saturation, ect.. good luck ! :) :) :)

Pretty!!! I wanted to raise butterflies this year but am busy with a baby shower (first grandchild):)
What should I do with this, put it back in the garden or in a box? What would I feed it?

Put him right back on the Parsley and he will be quite happy. It's one of their host plants. You are very fortunate. I've been trying to attract them for the last year. I'm not giving up since they are so beautiful!!

This was the first year I planted three huge plants of dill - I had several of those on the dill - they are beautiful caterpillars...

Hmm...gonna have to grow me some dill and parsley next year, that's a beautiful cat. Butterflies and their cats are all welcome in my garden.

I'm glad to know what that one is. I saw my first tiger swallowtail since my childhood on my phlox last summer, such a thrill. Grabbed my camera and got a photo but not a very good one. They are quick and don't spend long on a flower. Monarchs are a little easier to photograph.

That's a nice sharp closeup BTW.

This year I also planted a nice herb garden with fennel, parsley, basil and dill just for the butterfly caterpillars. I also have butterfly weed and have been watching it for caterpillars. None yet. Last year there were many nibbling away and they got fatter every day. I took my coffee into the garden each morning to keep an eye on them. They ate off every leaf but that was fine, I had planted it just for them. The plant survived and put on new leaves as time went on. Right between the butterfly weeds and the herbs I have Zinnias growing for the butterflies to sit on. I should have a lot of "Kodak moments" this summer:)

If you rub his/her back up in the front will look like eyeballs looking at you. So cute!!!

So glad to hear someone else grows fennel and parsley for the little guys. They also like chocolate mint and marojam.
