Please excuse my forgetfulness..

But I was looking at my bamboo and it seems like they all turned yellow (the leaves) this year. Not gray, as in dead, but all sickly ickly yellow. Even the super hardy mystery boo that I had gotten from a zone 5is garden. I have noticed that last summer with the newer culms that the newer leaves were awfully yellow looking. Could this be because of the soil? We have pretty bad soil up where they are growing, so last fall I put some chicken manure out there, and added some epsom salts as well. I also asked my husband to pee on the grove when he can. :D

So, is my boo hungry, or does everyones boo look yellow like this?

When my bamboo look like that it either means seasonal leaf changeout, or that they're not doing well. Bamboo leaves can show various shades of green, depending on the soil and the pH, but yellow - especially in the summer - is not a good sign. I'm assuming you haven't had any soil tests done to know what's deficient...you might consider that. As for your husband peeing by the bamboo...well that's not always helpful. I tried that once many years ago, and killed the plant I was "fertilizing." I'd consider using a slow-release fertilizer, like Osmocote or equivalent, instead. Also, are these bamboo getting enough water during the summer?

Hi Kudzu!

Thank you for the great info, I'll have him stop whizzing on the bamboo. Seeing as all of my bamboo looks pretty darn yellow, I'm thinking maybe they didn't get enough water last summer. Where they are at, it's all pretty dry, and we had a killer drought last year too.
So, like you said, it's probably the drought. I better make sure to water them if we have another one this year. I thought bamboo was indestructible! :)

Also, do you know what Ph bamboo likes? I did fertilize them with some chicken poo this fall, but I didn't put loads on, so it's not fertilizer burn. Hmm, maybe I should get my husband to poo on the boo. Nah, that would KILL them for sure!

Exactly, and this situation has not just been going on X number of years, but for quite awhile. You can't slap it on any particular administration, but has been an accumulation of several, each seemingly afraid to take the steps needed to rectify and stabilise the previous. When we were riding the bubbles, it made for wonderful press, no? But they weren't solid foundations. This was bound to happen, and it finally did. I have had a small business for nineteen years now, and it's a ruthless and risky way to make a living. No administration......right down to the grass roots ones have been kind to them, or insisted on a level playing field in this country. The thing is, they're the entities who had the employment in the great depression when the big boys crumbled and kept employment and wages more diversified. It's called not putting all your eggs into one basket. Just last week, I received a credit application from one of my major suppliers. I filled one out twenty years ago, and survived the two year failure rate most small businesses die from. I've done business with them from the day I got my business license twenty years ago. What? I am LOL. I know why all their customers got that letter. They're obviously reconsidering their risks. I don't need their credit line, and I'm not even sending it back. I'm quite willing to deal on a cash basis. I have a sneaky suspicion they'll sell to me anyway. What really irrates me is I remember back in the mid-eighties the push by the government for people to set up their own retirement accounts. Yes, that's a wise decision. But, how does the average person do that? Why by investments.......... So not only does the investment market affect us in so many ways, it is the financial security of the baby boomers. Hah.

New Dawn is def a contender. I've googled it and it looks like a winner. The blooms look right. They're only small plants now. I may have to gift them next year once Ive loved them up a bit. I've no room for a climber. I seriously have no memory of taking a cutting from anyone else last year. I'd never deliberately take a cutting of a climber. Maybe my children are plotting to drive me batty :-) M

I hope you don't mind an American chiming in. Episcopal is derived from a Latin word meaning bishop. It refers to the the authority of bishops in the hierarchical structure of the Church of England and Episcopal church, derived from the structure of the Catholic church. At the time of the American Revolution, churches too wanted to separate from England; hence the change in name. The same thing happened to the Church of Scotland, which became the Presbyterian church in the US after the Revolution. Presbyterian is derived from a Greek word meaning priest. It refers to the structure of that church, which does not have bishops and a hierarchy but governing bodies of presbyters. The Puritans, who were named for their desire to "purify" the Church of England from Catholic characteristics, settled the Massachusetts Bay Colony. They evolved into the Congregationalists, so-called from their style of church government in which the congregation is the ruling body. At the time of the Civil War (American), many churches divided along sectional grounds, sad to say. Most reunified after the war but the Baptists did not. Hence the Southern Baptists, one of the country's largest denominations. The Baptist church in the North, fairly common here in New England, is quite different from the Southern Baptists. As for the use of the word Episcopal in England, I hope some Brits will reply to your question.

Generally, bamboo can tolerate a wide range of pH, but probably prefer the slightly acid range (6.5-7.0 pH). Many bamboo growers give their plants lots of fertilizer, but I find that once in the spring with a slow release fertilizer is adequate. The most important thing the bamboo need is continuing moisture. It's hard to over-water bamboo; just don't have them in standing water for long periods of time.
