Flooded bamboo garden

Hi all,

I want to buy a 2 acres field near a river, to start a small bamboo nursery .Every year this field is flooded by that river for 2-3 times,and the soil will be covered by the water between 3 and even 7 days( very rare is it covered more than 7 days)The soil is a very good sandy and nutrient.As soon as the water goes down again the soil dries back in 2-3 days, so it is a good drained soil.In thoes periods when the water will cover the garden my bamboos will also be flooded.Will my bamboos be in danger because of the excess of the water or they will survive?What's your opinion?Haw many days will bamboos survive in that field covered by 10-40 inches of water?Are there some periods(autumn - spring)when they can withstand under the water , better than in the warm season(spring-summer) ?Thanks,

Not sure how long they can withstand being in water, I would assume they would be ok if it wasn't too moist going into the flood. I would worry about when it floods. The extra burst of nutrients could bring on shooting late in fall. I guess no matter what planting there should be ok since it will be a nursery and smaller divisions will be desired.

Some bamboos like Ph. Atrovaginata will have no problem... Can't say about others. It definitely isn't good to have most bamboos in standing water.

If you are buying the property anyway, give it a try. But if you are buying it solely to create a bamboo nursery, I think you have a high risk business plan.

Plus, what if there is an "every 20 years" type event where the flooding is more severe... It could kill off your whole business. Pretty sketchy.

Amsonia that is a lovely garden. You just gave me an idea to do the same maybe next year but I would face problems, one being that the Super here even if I got permission to garden in the enclosed courtyard would sabotage my garden along with some of the tenants. There used to be about two or three strips of exposed dirt like what you see in the center of parked cars to keep them parking straight. I eyed those dreaming about one day planting a garden but the Super is such a tool I never inquired. Well eventually the LL covered them over with concrete. :( I heard the Super is leaving (God I hope this is true) so I might work up the nerve for a roof garden. Or I might try a vertical garden and pray no one bothers it.

I don't know how long the salt stays in but it must wash out little by little each time it rains. Last year we had a shorter salt water soaking from hurricane Irene, but it rained heavily for a week or two after. Worms and slugs were not wiped out like this time but were clearly diminished.

I think you should do some scientific tests.. get different species and soak them for a good week or two and see if they survive. I bet they would survive but I'm no expert. As long as the soil drains they shouldn't rot. Good luck.

Thank you all for your advises!I didn't buy the property yet, and I will not buy it anyway.It is important to know different opinions regarding my plans for the future.Best regards, my "bamboo friends"!
