Are you sure you aren't growing Dr. Huey? Sound like it. Is it a deep red rose? Blooms once, then defoliates. If so, probably your original rose died off one winter, so rootstock took over. Dr. Huey is a common rootstock, but most people don't want it as a plant in their garden--for the reasons stated above. Kate

Leave the lily stem until they die back in late fall. You can deadhead the lily but cutting the pedicels off (the small flower stalks which holds the flower to the main stem) to avoid having the lily spent energy on producing seeds. But let the main flower stem stay. Continue to water and fertilize. In late fall, after the stem is brown you can cut it back to the ground, but not before.

Definitely do not cut them down completely. Not only will that weaken the plant which uses its leaves all summer to store energy for next year, but some peonies turn nice colors in the fall. If the plant is large, healthy, and well-established, you could shorten it a bit with no harm done. Younger plants need all their leaves. On my huge plants, I cut off the flower stalks by reaching down below the rest of the foliage, so the stumps don't stick up above the bushy mass. My plants are also in hoops, so they stay upright, but it is not too late to tie them up loosely with string. Without the flowers to get wet and heavy and topple over, it doesn't take much support to keep the stems upright and they will look better.

hi- I'll take a stab at answering even though I am new to amaryllis growing :). The leaves coming out after the blooming is normal. The leaves are what produce energy for the bulb so it doesn't shrivel up. Once the leaves are out you will need to water a little more frequently than you did when there were no leaves. These plants are also heavy feeders and need to be fertilized. Also, the second scape is normal, especially if you had a big bulb from a store. I've had 2-3 scapes per bulb that I bought from the store. Not sure if my bulbs will repeat this performance next year when I am the one taking care of them :) Be sure to put your plant where it can get enough sunlight indoors and then outside in the spring/summer if you'd like. Some people also grow them exclusively indoors if it is a rare bulb and you have a good sunny location. In the fall is when you can force your bulb to go dormant by reducing watering - some people cut off the leaves at this time, others don't. You can search on this forum for different ways! Good luck with your growing - sounds like you're treating it right because most of my bulbs have not grown leaves yet!
