Jackfruit... wow!
Comments (36)THe SMALLEST jackfruit tree I have seen with fruit on it was ~15' tall, and very wide. The trunk was fatter than my upper arm. I don't know what kind of pot would hold one, much less the vry large fruits. My gold nugget was ~15' tall when I topped it and pruned the lower branches off. I'm hoping that next year (It's 4 years old) it will give me fruit. BTW, I have over 30 varieties of tropical fruits on my property and Jakfruit is one of my top three faves. Gary...See MoreSpringing
Comments (14)Gary, I canÂt figure out the chill hours here, and think there may be some other factor involved with why some fruit trees produce, and others donÂt. The books IÂve read suggest we get 300-600 hours of chilling. But a Bartlett pear in the far back of my double city lot yard that is supposed to need 800 hours of chilling, produces pears like grapes if I donÂt thin them. Two apricot trees (perhaps Blenheim-500 hrs) produced more apricots than I could handle for many years. Yet a BavayÂs Gage, which only needs 600 hours of chilling, located at the south of my house, didnÂt leaf out last year above three feet, possibly because of inadequate chilling. There seems to be a cold blanket of air that settles in the far back that provides more hours of chilling to whatever is there, below around 3-4 feet. IÂm experimenting with growing European plums, gages, and mirabelles in large pots there, putting them on their sides during dormancy to maximize the blanket of chill air. Also, sections of the north side of my house seem to stay cooler as well, and IÂm trying some higher chill apricots there, also in pots on their sides. The joys of zone pushing!...See MorePictures of my NEW & Old Fruit trees
Comments (38)Wow Jacob, I dub you the Harry of SoCal! I can't believe how many tropical/subtropical fruit trees you have. I especially love your Mangosteen tree. Can you give me some pointers on what you feed it, how often and what kind of water you water with. Do you do any foliar feedings? I just recently got into citrus also and was looking for a blood orange myself and after doing lots of research, I settled on a Smith Red Valencia. I just purchased a citrus juicer and juiced bags of Moro and Taroccos blood oranges and depending on where I purchased the fruit from, it was very sweet and delicious or very tart. I really wish I had a backyard as large as yours. I can imagine how wonderful it would be once most your trees are in full production. You guys with large yards make me so envious. Thanks for sharing all your pictures and information. Simon...See MoreTropical Fruit Forum Meet and Greet
Comments (74)Jeff Hagen is an international man of mystery and a tropical fruits genius all at the same time. He even buys books on how to prune big ol mango trees right at the hip notch. He knows how to graft little sprigs (not kidding here) and big branches due to practice practice practice, the same way you get to Carnegie Hall (old joke) He lives in the same humble burg as me (Tamarac Fl) but cannot devote the time he wishes he could to tropical fruits because he is busy coding coding coding as in writing computer code, to earn his family's daily bread. He is married to Elsy who is his equal in tropical fruits. They both tend to their mini-nursery and mini-grove with five large mango trees, canistel, lychee, big joboticaba tree, persimmons, lemon drop mangosteen, carambola, jackfruit, muchos papaya and banana and plantain which are so weed like invasive and easy to grow. Lots more stuff like Cherimoya and Sugar Apple but.... I have bought mango trees from Jeff so I am not impartial. Jeff would not write this so I did My knowledge of tropical fruits took a quantum leap when I met Elsy and Jeff last summer and bought a Nam Doc Mai and Pim Sen Mun that Jeff grafted...See Moresultry_jasmine_nights (Florida-9a-ish)
