Gordonia Lasianthus/Lobolly Bay

I've tried to grow this tree several times, and my little trees always die a slow death. It's supposed to be native to my area, and I read somewhere that one grows or grew along Red Creek close to here. I'd like to plant another one - anybody have any tips on successfully growing it? I know it's supposed to like wet conditions, and I've got those conditions in the hollow/creek head on my property. Maybe the fact that it grows/grew along a creek means it likes sandy soil? I've only got heavy soil.
Again, any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!
