Rhodo between rock and hard place

Hi there!

I have a rhodo that's burried under a magnolia tree, and I'm looking for advice on how to help it, but not hurt the tree.

The rhodo and magnolia were probably planted about the same time in the 1950's. Now the magnolia has grown higher than my house and sort of around and over the rhodo, which is only about 4 feet tall, probably not much more than that around. It gets some dappled sunlight while the magnolia has leaves.

It had a few red blooms in '04 and '05, but nothing in the last 2 years. I've only lived in the house since '04 so I don't know what it did before that. The leaves are flat and healthy looking, but the branches are kind of spindly.

I'm afraid to try moving the rhodo as it's planted only about 4 feet from the magnolia's trunk, and I'd really hate to damage such a magnificent tree.

Does anyone have any suggestions for helping the rhodo, but not hurting the magnolia?

Thank you!
