One single Hibiscus seedling from 'Moy Grande'. The first few suffered frost damage and died...this one was a little older and survived to grow new leaves. I'll be potting it up to grow on more before planting out in fall as I did with last years Disco Bell and TX Star.

Celosia seedlings...I sowed 'Pink Candle' and a C. plumosa (burgundy), but couldn't tell you who is who!

Asclepias tuberosa..also thinned out quite a bit. Started out with about 15 seedlings. I sure hope this one doesn't spread like Common Milkweed. I spent almost an entire afternoon digging and pulling out the mother plant and runners...some were as far away as 10' from the mother!! I thought I got it all, but found a few more shoots already 8" high yesterday...ugh!! The first 3 years were well behaved...must be very slow to run. It did take 3 years to flower! I have A. incarnata to plant as well.

Yvonne's Salvia...was indoors sown this year. I planted 4 out in a row behind last years Hibiscus which btw are just breaking thru the surface...yeah they lived :)) That is a Schizanthus in the picture:

Okra 'Clemson Spineless' was also one started indoors this year. This year am keeping the black plastic mulch down the entire season; the last 2 years I've tried and failed this crop! I believe my problem was:

A) planted to soon and believe cold stunted them/set back.

B) removed black plastic and replaced with straw..soil temps likely were cooled rather than warmed with straw.

These and the Brussels Sprouts get planted today.

Here is the new bed I've been working on. It's mostly quack grass and I have to turn sod and yank all rhizome pieces to prevent re-infestation. Not to mention there are a LOT of rocks! See the rocks laid out as stepping stones...yeah they were in the soil!! I have about 12 more feet to dig up. Picture is from May 26th

Part of the NW-NE Strip...have poppies coming up in the road outside of the bed and am laying black plastic down to kill weeds around the perimeter where it's bad. This bed is only 20' across from a neglected plot of ground full of weeds, some wild roses and Golden Rod...

wow, love the pics! Everything looks so healthy!

I am glad you posted them. I planted Nicotina and forgot where, seeing your pics helped me identify the plants!

Did you WS the Carrots? I have tried carrots direct sowing before and did a terrible job!

Oh no! The soil is just went from rain LOL! The only beds I've really been amending are the two which I use to plant veggies... Those get rabbit bedding/manure early to mid Feb when it's workable. I put in compost whenever it finishes...compost isn't quick to mature when it's an open pile around here...plus I can't turn it as often. I do mulch moist of the beds with straw...which I usually start laying it down in about a week from now. Not that most of my beds require moisture retentive soil (because they don't) but because I like to keep the weeds a bay. I'm surrounded by weeds :O Vera

Hello all, Im not really new to garden web just new to the Ohio Valley forum. I mostly stick to the Bromeliad forum and i can't believe i didn't think to look for this one. I've got a bunch of Vriesea 'Christine' pups that i've been looking for an excuse to repot if anybody is interested. All i need is an address and ill load up the bromes and girlfriend(to carry them) and im on my way. :)

Well, I think it's the last time for tying up my Tomatoes this morning--they've reached the top of the cattle panel. When I get the beds all done, I'm going to take 2 panels, fastened at one end, and put them into a raised bed-at the side--then go over a center bed-that would mean-say, bed one and three would have a end-then it would go over bed two. I want at least 2 panel ends to a bed. I figure Tomatoes, Pole beans (Fortex, of course) Squash, Watermelons, Cantelopes, etc will grow up and over-while the center bed will have shade. As my Daughter used to say "Sounds good on paper!" Then, instead of growing tall Okra, Eggplant (which I've never grown before), I'm going to go for the dwarf varities. In the meantime--I'm torn about the weather! Hot and Hotter, with no rain!Garden still looks good, havent watered yet, I dont usually. Sweet Potatoes, and Cucumbers are vining-Potatoes and Onions almost ready. Garden could use rain-BUT--if it dont rain, the fields wont be lush and green--so I can turn the horse out to pasture. Means less chores to do night and morning--and I wont have to pay $5.75 a bale for her hay. And here I used to think that when someone described a horse as "a easy-keeper" it sounded nice--it simply means they can founder on grass! KY3 said this morning that humidity in Spf. was down 68% Ours is hanging in the air--humidity here is 93% according to weatherbug. I did some mowing yesterday about 5 pm--was it hot!never realized the tractor put off so much heat. I heard we had 2 heat-related deaths in Mo. already--everyone try not to work in the heat unless you have to--and drink lots of liquids.

Yes Karen, those carrot seedlings were wintersown. Last year I did the same and it makes such a difference vs. direct sowing. Having more control of moisture and humidity greatly improves germination!!

That kohlrabi is really pretty. Nice gardens all. What are you using for mulch? I love that you have things coming up in the road. I want plants like that.

Hi floodthelast,

I just use wheat straw...sometimes its barley straw. I usually mix in dried grass clippings, but haven't started that yet as the first few rounds of clippings get added to the compost heaps.
Other plants that are popping up in the road and elsewhere, both in and out of beds are tons of Rudbeckia hirta, Larkspur, Amaranthus 'Intense Purple', Yarrow, Blue Flax and Lavender. The most annoying by far is the Aster laevis...that seed blows everywhere...good grief :O

Vera, they look great. So you'll finally have the Yvonne's Salvia!

I have 3 A. tuberosas. I love them. They stay fairly compact and don't reproduce by underground runners. They have a long taproot so plant them where you want them to stay. I tried to move a first year one that had spent summer in the ground, about 3 or 4 months, and broke the taproot, killing the plant.

I took this pic of mine yesterday, a 4th year plant, getting ready to bloom.

And if I keep it from growing seed pods (hate those milkweed bugs!) it reblooms in late summer.

Vera, your gardens are always a welcome sight.

The only planted pot I didn't empty out last Fall had Nicotiana sanderae in it with Zinnia. I've got lots of little selfsown Nicotiana seedlings sitting in that pot to be transferred around. They're the lime green flowers. After looking at the alata I think they'd be more impressive blooms. No fragrance on sanderae and shield bugs constantly sit right in center of flowers. At least critters don't eat those plants so they're worth some space.

I know it's backbreaking work to get out all those rocks but I'd have to buy them for garden borders here...and I do want a rock garden somewhere, sometime. The only thing in the dirt here at my father's is gravel. When the shovel hits something solid with a "clink" it's either more gravel or Chinese Wisteria runners the diameter of the shovel handle.

Thanks for sharing, Vera. Lovely pics, as usual. I usually direct sow my Clemson Spineless and get one or two good harvests,but this year I wish I had started them indoors. It's still very cold here and rainy, so no use putting seeds in the soil to rot. We expect good weather this weekend, so I am putting them in anyway. Rain is in the long-range forecast for the following Monday. Where is this global warming happening?!?

Vera - Every year i just LOVE your photos... you label everything and I can really appreciate all the work you have done transforming your yard - as I know what it is like to keep making new beds...

Wintersowing is so addictive that I created borders I never would have done had I not known how to grow from seed, especially perennials.

Keep posting your photos all season, everyone here loves them..

I'm glad to see your Tomato seedlings are still small. I don't even have sprouts yet! The nights have still been in the 40s (sometimes 30s!) and the days have not even hit the 70s (barely reaching 65). I don't know when I'm going to get Toms, but I'm definitely not buying plants...plants wouldn't grow well in this weather either!

Great to see your progress on your garden beds...love that Hibiscus! and the Rhubarb! :-) Yummm.
How did your Lovage do? If you need more seeds I have plenty left from last year, and will have more this year.
