Amaryllis as a cut flower

bobb_grow

I grow amaryllis under lights in the basement. I have started to cut the flower scapes just before they start to bloom and bring them upstairs because my wife really likes them as a cut flower and because we now have poor natural light upstairs (a new patio cover blocks the light). I find when I do not cut the scapes before they flower that, by the time the second scape has finished, the leaf growth is very pale and limp due to the poor light.

Now I read in Veronica Read's book that bulbs used for cut flowers usually last only 4 - 5 years. Does anyone know if that is because cutting the scapes early weakens the bulb?

Thanks

Bob
