Yes I hold back water, but even more important is fertilizer, or pruning. Both stimulate late season growth. New growth is at risk. Even if you have tip dieback, the tree will survive, and I myself will be removing a lot more than the tips before bud break in early spring. Also I probably will spray them with wilt stop. A wax based anti-desiccant. I'm really using it to protect my blackberries. I lost most of my canes last winter. So those I cannot cover with leaves will be sprayed soon. Any leftover will go on the trees. Well especially Spice Zee Nectaplum as the main leader died back to just above the graft last winter. Branches are thicker this year, all the same a very cool tree I want to protect till it has more girth! OK, let's go back to water. because trees can lose a lot of moisture from drying winds in the winter. You really want them very wet right about now! Sure hold back late season, but you want the tree well hydrated before the cold comes. So about this time of year, resume watering.

Of course, if it's the one I started some weeks ago, never mind... Anyhow, last winter I was told that the ponytail palm I'm taking care of didn't need any light and needed very infrequent watering until growing season, but around early April the caudexes were soft and the leaves kinked terribly. A few good soaking restored the caudexes, but about half the kinked leaves broke off at the kinks, some are still kinked but not actually broken, and maybe a third are undamaged. I'm giving it more light, but although the leaves are getting stronger I have to settle for artificial light until the partly-kinked leaves are strong enough to withstand being moved back and forth between the windows (which only get 3-4 hours of sun) and the light fixtures. So do pay attention to the light requirements--this plant really needs it!

Even though October decided to bless us without frost, November has shown it has no intent to extend the same courtesy. Wednesday we finally dropped, no, plunged, below freezing and haven't gone back since. In hindsight, it should have been obvious my typical cold protective measures of sheets, shower curtains, water jugs, etc, are better suited to the light frosts of late September and early October, and had no chance of being effective (for the plants... It was super effective at getting the attention of the neighborhood busybody / self-appointed HOA informant) Up until its undignified demise to mush, Tomato-Zilla had continued to climb beyond the second story balcony and was still aggressively growing water sprouts, flowering, and setting fruit. Damn things still weren't turning red though! Behold, the final harvest:

I am having the same issue. It is so early isnt it? Like you say , not all but definitely several. It is almost prunning season here in southern Oregon, a couple more weeks and then Crossing the fingers that we dont get a late frost
