the best thing to do.. is put it back in the ground.. AT THE PROPER PLANTING TIME FOR YOUR LOCALE!!!! right now... more leaves.. means more food production .. means more root growth.. which means success ... eventually.. you should remove all the suckers to one or two left ... it depends whether you want a tree.. or a shrub .... i would wait until spring.. to insure the old part is truly dead ... at that time... if it does not bud out.. once the new growth hardens off.. i would perform surgery ... and remove it .. probably within two to three inches of the new sprouts .... a picture would sure help make that decision ..... if it is the plain old variety .... your new sprouts should be just fine.. if it was some foo foo named cultivar ... and it has sprouted from below the graft... you will have a plant based on the root stock of the graft.. which may or may not be to your liking ... only time will tell ... unless you can ID the graft location ... trees, shrubs, and conifers are amazing .. in their ability to overcome just about anything.. when just provided just water .... go figure on that .... now.. lets discuss what possessed you to do this in the first place .... lol ... good luck ken

I don't blame you for being concerned, I think there are few trees as majestic as the Southern Magnolia. I had one planted on my front lawn here in SW Florida 13 months ago, - just outside my screened lanai, A 20 ft tall gem that is now loaded with foot wide, intensely aromatic white blossoms that draw the attention of everyone who walks by. IMHO, well worth the effort and expense. It too has a mild case of fungus on the very bottom leaves, something I plan to eliminate soon by giving it a single spraying of copper sulfate, ( on both sides of the leaves as well as the trunk ). Lowes, Home Depot and Walmart all sell the plastic jugs of sulfate as well as the spray bottle that screws onto the garden hose. In your case three sprayings may be needed, each one two weeks apart. I am sick! I'm losing several beautiful Bracken's Brown Beauties. NOT yellow leaves, we're talking dark brown and drooping leave. Trees are near easement. Either the county (which is always so very helpful!!!!:( :( :( when it comes to killing plants, sprayed a strong herbiside on the easement to knock down tall weeds, or Scott's lawn service killed them with herbiside. Magnolias along border of easement. I'm betting it was county!!! Past experience. I planted Carolina jasmine to help control erosion and create beauty on the culvert, put out 75 plants. Lot of work, no small expense. Some fool from the county hit it with kill-all herbicide. Yes, high grass should have been mowed. But I can't do it because the sides of the ditch / easement are so steep and difficult to mow. I've almost turned the lawn mower over on myself several times trying to mow it. My husband doesn't have any problem mowing it, but absolutely won't get around to doing it! Hence the county herbicide spraying. And now killing I don't know how many of my beautiful magnolias. I'm real angry. Having a terrible day. Really. I loved /babies all those trees! Nothing but a crime to kill them!

Probably a problem with the soil conditions. Could take awhile to figure out what - seek local guidance from Texas Cooperative Extension branch office, horticultural consultants etc.
