Amaryllis/Hippeastrum

Mine still hasn't bloomed, please read!

Hi everyone! I have an Amaryllis that I planted in Nov that still hasn't bloomed. I think it was because I didn't give it food. My question is, if I put some miracle grow sticks in it now.. will it still bloom for me soon? Or is it too long passed the usual bloom time for it to still bloom? Thanks so much for reading.

Well, one generally feeds the bulb after blooming is done - when the foliage begins, and throughout the summer. If your bulb feels firm and looks healthy, I would wait - water a bit. I can tell you that of 4 new bulbs I bought this year, all have bloomed but one - Christmas Gift (go figure). It is large, healthy and green, and is showing just a smidge of a scape, but it has been stalled since November. Some bulbs just have a schedule of their own. But make sure not to overwater, if you decide to do so. I hope that helps.

I have some bulbs I got last summer that haven't bloomed yet. One is just starting to get a bud. Some will probably bloom in the spring.

last spring ... there was a very hot spell in march.. followed by severe cold in april and most of may.. i lost a vast majority of flowers on the spring shrubs .... they should be back this year ... i am in Adrian MI [just over the border form toledo ... ... nearly due north of you.. a bit west .. its been a very cold spring.. nothing has even started to bud out ... do NOTHING.. for a few weeks.. and lets see what happens ... i planted mine 10 years ago.. and have never done anything to mine.. i n the way of fert ... i doubt that is your solution ... it is not a big/fast mag .. i think .. mine is barely 5 feet tall ... after 10 years ... if its not dead.. it must have grown last year ... patience ... ken

the flower buds are ready to go in fall .. pretty microscopic ... and severe winter weather.. will kill the buds .. here in adrian mi ... cold z5 ... i am lucky if i get a good show once every 3 years or so ... and at least one or two in 5.. no show at all ... since you dont say where you are ... who knows ... next time.. start your own new post .. instead of dredging up an 8 year old post.. its great you tried to search ... but go for new.. with a great searchable title... so the next person can find it ... where are you.. and how cold was winter??? fert is a possibility.. in a highly fertd lawn ... as too much nitro.. will force the tree to green growth.. to the detriment of flower ... ken

tom8olvr, You were the one who told me it would be OK to start a batch of seeds today (April 13) after I got back from vacation, so according to you, you are not going anywhere in a handbasket. I'm starting Batch 3 today - my cherries and my "wispy" types. And I'm potting up Batch 2 today as well, which are about 2 1/2 weeks old. Batch 1 was started over 4 weeks ago and looking very awesome, but we will see if they get a little too big for their britches by May 16. Overall, my mad science experiment is 9 weeks/7 weeks/5 weeks from plant out, and a few of varieties in the 9 week batch are also in the 7 week batch. GWCW (GardenWeb Conventional Wisdom) says that the 7 week batch will do as well if not better than the same variety in the 9 week batch - I'll start posting pictures soon.

~~~ and increased blossom drop and BER problems. In fact many commercial growers do what is called dry farming for those reasons. ~~~ Hmmm. This is one of those "takes all kinds" moments. I am finding that younger plants (or could it be cooler temps?) do suffer BER more when more moist but the plants are growing so, I can't deprive them of it too much. Older plants, seem to get it more if allowed to dry out too much. I also find that heavy fruit setters, excluding cherrys, are more suseptable as are unpruned plants and those in smallish containers. This yr. only plants in 8gal and smaller have suffered BER so far with 2 exceptions. One German Queen (she was finiky last yr too but the taste, Oh my!) tom in a 2 cubic ft. container and for the first time I remember I had to toss a half doz from one inground plant, Health Kick. Health Kick is in my "gorilla site" and virtually ignored ... no pruining, almost no suplemental water or feed. As to the prunng, I've just about convinced myself and will be sharing some photos that show that moderate amounts of pruning are beneficial if you want early fruits. Purdue has already shown a size increace. No, its not a lab grade test. Some of it you'll have to take my word and some extrapolation made. Numbers are not in question, pruning reduces numbers but to me, even though less flavorful than those when the heat comes, early tomatoes are valuable.

Normally, recently purchased bulbs bloom 6-12 weeks after being planted, if they donÂ´t do it in that period of time they will bloom in the spring.

My Sugar Candy is still sleeping. Planted. NO sign of any greens or buds. It is firm and sitting nice, but doesn't want to wake up for 3 months now (roughly), and others are blooming around it like crazy... Go figure. It sometimes happens.

Hi everyone! When I plant my bulbs, I donÂ´t water it much, only once every 7-10 days till it wakes up. If you water it too much, its roots may rot off. Does your bulb have some leaves? If it does,it probably wonÂ´t flower.So feed it regularly. If it doesnÂ´t, water it a little and wait and do not feed.

Hi! Yes, it's had long/huge green leaves for months now! I guess that means I should feed it?

Whenever the leaves are growing I fertilize every other watering with Miracle grow, you could use any 10-10-10 or 20-20-20 food as well.

Yes, if it has leaves, feed it regularly. It probably wonÂ´t flower this year but never mind, take care of it and it will definitely flower next time!!!
