ws is sooo a wesome!!!! how happy would you bee????

ok, this is my first year ws ing!! and i did so much of it because,, well... i just didn't think it'd do that well!! to be honest!! turns out i did great!! so great in fact that i had to give alot away!! i mean a real lot!! more than i could ever plant!! and i'm not even done!! not even 1/4 of the way!! so i have to get really busy!! LOL so i can get busy giving some more away!! LOL now next year i know that i can ws some in seperate containers and how to do it so i can sell it!! and not have to worry!! LOL so i thought i'd share how happy i am with this new to me thing!! LOL now all i have to do is keep them alive in the ground!! LOL out of the 3 8x4 plywood sheets i have totally full of winter sown stuff, 3/4 of them have turned out!! so i'm a happy camper!! ohhhh ya! and 2 weeks ago i'm an aunt again!! and yesterday an aunt again to a niece!! so tell me! how awesomely happy would you be?? **hugest grinn** Hugs Medo

Oh medo! They are just precious! Both nice healthy looking babies! Soooooooooo beautiful! Boy I am glad I am done,pics like this make me want another one...lol....thanks for sharing!:)

your welcome!! when we came out hubs was like, i wish we could turn back time, heh!!! me too til they get to the talk back and not listening stage!! LOL even diapers don't bother me!! i breed stubborness!! LOL so noooo wayyyyy!! LOL and my kiddo's, i taught them to have a mind of their own, much to well!! LOL ***big, huge sigh*** LOL one tired mommy!!! talla is only almost 6 but let me tell ya, this girl is like a 13 yr old!! i am so afraid!! ya know when thay say be afraid!! very afraid!!! with this one they meant it!! LOL she thinks like 3-4 steps ahead!! LOL she has it made up in her mind what she's gonna do to her hubs when he fights with her and things like this, i'm like what????????? ummmmm talla, your not even 6 yet, be a kid, ya know she has 6 kids, and is married to a husband named bruno. (a dogs name) LOL okayyyy LOL or a bouncer but he only goes to interviews, LOL she's very smart!! my niece is very alert!! both actually, i havent seen anna YET, LOL but did ya notice, both are marie's?? LOL

I agree that shallow containers were the culprit, too. I tried a few of them my first year and didn't like them at all. Now I stick to gallon milk jugs and 2 liters too, work much better. 3" of potting mix is beneficial. Shallow containers just don't work well., don't drain well enough with most soil mixes. Assuming the same soil is used, the perched water table will be the same height in a tall deep container and a short squat one. Therefore the short squat one won't drain as well as the taller one. If you aren't familiar with the concept you can google things like "movement of water in containers" or "perched water table". Al (talpa) is the resident expert on the subject at Gardenweb and I'll link you to his original post (there are many continuations). It's long but very good. I look forward to it, Grouchy. Vegetable gardening is getting a bit... predictable... for me. Not that I am by any means an expert, and I still have plenty to learn, I think one can grow beans and tomatoes so many times in a row before they need something to supplement their interests. So, for me, I think it's time to set my sights on new horizons (of course, I will also be growing plenty of beans and tomatoes as well). Impulse? I think it's more of a compulsive disorder for me. I have already decided to cut 2 annuals that I have seeds for from the main project, though, I will probably stick them in a nice pot just because I already have them. Xeriscape I have a limited understanding of. While I have worked on a few xeric yard projects in my time as a landscaper, I would say I know far more about how to successfully grow a pepper than I do xerscaping a yard. But, that too, is my main focus in my personal landscaping here at the house. Not only does it more suit my laissez faire gardening style, it fits well with the mountain west/desert southwest type-plantings that I aesthetically prefer. I have settled on the P. strictus which, the good Lord willing and the creek don't rise, I will be planting with the A. caerulea. I was also intrigued by the scented Palmer's penstemon (P. palmeri) and my compulsive disorder put those in my basket as well, though, where I'm going to put it, I will have to work out between now and when it (hopefully) pops up. I decided on Agastache ruprestris 'Sunset hyssop' from seed and at the risk of becoming overwhelmed, I will probably wind up buying a red or yellow P. pinifolius as well as a couple other other dry/heat loving plants to go along with it (Russian sage? gaillardia? ornamental grass?). I think, in regards to your digitalis conundrum, there's a lot of keyboard warriors out there. I don't pay much attention to all the doom-and-gloom perpetuated on the interwebs. It's like the bandying about of the horror and danger of bringing a poinsettia into your home at Christmas time. How many children are killed each year because they ate a houseplant? How about a garden plant? These same people who did a google search one day and now make it their life's mission to set up caution tape around anything and everything probably don't even have enough sense to put a fence around their backyard pool. But hey, at least their tot's wont die from eating the holiday decorations or their mother's flower garden. (Of course, I am very much what they call "free range" parent, so, off my soap box now). Thank you for the generous offer of seeds, but I did in fact buy some (last week?), I wish now I had waited, haha.

Though I said I can’t suggest plants, I do have some thoughts to throw out in case you haven’t already had them yourself. You mentioned landscape design cost @ $1500. - have you checked costs for a just a planting plan design with you buying your materials & DIY labor? Some larger nurseries do provide that limited design service ( or can recommend someone) &, especially if you ask, will give you a discount if you’re buying most or all of your plants from them. I got a 10% all season long discount from a nursery after showing them my professional landscape design plan for both hardscape & plant material so they could see we were starting from scratch with a new home. We were installing the plants as DIY because I wanted to choose them, swap some from plan, control costs & I like doing it. You said your neighborhood has other terraced yards - have you / can you look at them up close & take pics of planted layouts & of specific plants that appeal? I Googled images of terraced front yards in Atlanta & there are a lot of them to look at for ideas. Your comments “assuming we’re looking for cub appeal...”. & “Should I be mixing in evergreens...”. Absolutely, yes on both counts! Planting evergreens provides year round appeal and structure. I would explore true dwarf conifers, spring flowering shrubs, some very low evergreen ground covers (think elfin Thyme), spring bulbs - how beautiful scattered through those layers! I would avoid a row of tall plantings that would completely hide your stone foundation that is a decorative feature. Be mindful of mature size of any trees you plant as they may change the light received on the terrace & shade out your plants. I don’t know if your front scape was completely shaded before the loss of your huge tree but I bet your light has changed. I’d look at a smallish flowering tree to place closest to house. All of these flowers & textures may be a happy medium between your idea of English garden look & wife’s idea of 3 season blooms & foundation color. I’m leaning towards your wife’s idea. I do admire English gardens but not for a front yard -too many flowers & too winter bare. With your property, it sounds like you have space for one somewhere, right?

I did notice the Maries....lol..
My daughters kindergarten teacher told me not to worry about the independent mind,because that is where our leaders come from. So no worries on Miss Talla,she will be just fine! Now her future hubby....I dont know....lol....I do wish I could have a forever baby,one that never walks ,talks and leaves home,but I guess reality would be I would have a 6 foot giant blob on my couch for eternity...lol...

medo - take a breath!!! You *are* excited, aren't you? With every right to be - those two are darlings! I love the way Anna Marie's teeny feet are just lost in those jammies! Too cute! And Lucy Marie is very comfy on Daddy's shoulder, isn't she?

Don't have any of my own, but I certainly enjoy other folks' offspring! Your Talla sounds like my kind of gal ...

LOL anna marie was only 5.7 oz and i think like 16 or 17" and Lucy was 8.4 oz and 21" so we had from one extreme to the other in babies!! LOL
couldn't ya just see that 6' blob!! LOL hey as long as they plant some seeds and plant they'd be fine!!! LOL **giggle** LOL ohhh yes i am soo excited!! and suni my neighbor is in remission from cancer!! we just found out yesterday!! that is way awesome and then i was so sad cuz i had to pass on some free yes free clothes that were my size, which i could really use!! always getting things the kids need!! (she NEVER stops growing!! she lives up to her name!!!) so the lady emailed me back and said they are still available!! WOO HOO so she will drop them off at my brothers house!! so hubs will get to see our niece again!! lucky duck!! LOL and did i mention the clothes are free!!! LOL so i'll just continue to pray and be a happy camper!! cuz GOD has been great to us!! Many Hugs Medo :'))

i did decide that next year on winter sowing, i will do some of them in the cell packs one seed in each one. that way it will be easier to to take out, the ones i did do in cell packs, came out just great!! awesome roots!!
hmmmm my secret? my kids keep me on my toes!! LOL and i'm only full of energy in my head!! LOL **really giggling**
