Fortuniana Rootstock for Roses in AZ?

Hi,

I used to buy OGR's and hybrid teas from Pickering Nurseries in Canada when I lived in Southern Cal., budded on Fortuniana stock. It was perfect for hotter climates.

They have since abandoned fortuniana in favor of multiflora, which does better in colder climes.

Where can I find OGR's (blush noisette, for instance) on fortuniana? Mail order or local is fine.

And, since I am new to the Phoenix area, I am also wondering if fortuniana is really a must, or if Dr. Huey would do all right?

Any thoughts are appreciated. :)

Fortuniana is not a MUST but as far as my garden is considered it is a VERY strong want. This means that if I have to have the rose I will settle but I will make every effort to get it on Fort.

I highly suggest K & M Roses from Mississippi. James is amazing and the rose list is the best there is.

I just posted that we are going to have a rose auction in Mesa on Feb 20 with a great selection. My email is there also if you want you can contact me and I am always willing to help. My garden is always open for viewing and I have lots of suggestions.

Hi! Yes, that's what I figured. But, I have purchased some from CR (peat pots to be removed) on good 'ol Dr. Huey (ah, the memories from CA). They are already sprouting, amazingly. I use only organic goodies (planted with a mix of blood, bone, a tiny bit of alfalfa meal so as not to burn), plus I put micorrhizae tablets in the soil for all my plants, rose or otherwise. So, we shall see. Digging those holes here was MURRRRDERRR. lol :)

I got: Julia Child, Rainbow Sorbet, Cinco De Mayo, Easy Does it, Just Dreamy, Strike It Rich, and Tahitian Sunset. What do you think of these? I had 94 plants in CA, but none of these.

I will definitely check out K&M and do my darndest to visit you at the Mesa rose sale.

I'm not TD, but I've grown the rose bush Fortuniana and I've tried to grow roses grafted onto Fortuniana. Fortuniana (the rose) survives here even when the temps get below 0Fahrenheit, albeit with some dieback. The survival of the rootstock (for a decade now) emboldened me to try roses grafted onto that as rootstock. That was the problem. The roots are so strong that they keep pumping through winter, and that means growth of new canes and stems, even though it's freezing and the new canes and stems will die. People I know who are growing roses grafted onto Fortuniana in my zone and colder do serious protection of those roses through winter; this can be as massive as plywood boxes with stuffing (Memphis TN) and other mounding of protections. For Idaho, the question would be, will you have a long enough growing season to make this worthwhile for the rose to grow vigorously to offset the months it spends in serious protected conditions. You could try one rose on Fort and the same rose on other rootstock and see which one works better for you over three or four years.

We see Fortuniana here and there in California, growing like a weed -- and clearly, these are old rootstock plants. I'd say it must be very successful. Here, we have a Fortuniana collected in an old cemetery, which has grown from the bottom of our hillside to the top, along an old fence. I'd LOVE to try roses on Fortuniana here. Frankly, from the look of the successful old rootstock plants, I'd also love to try Ragged Robin. At least if it suckered, and the scion died, you'd have a great rose remaining. Sad to say, unless the nursery has virus free scion material, it doesn't matter if the rootstock used is virus free. It's VERY rare to find un-virused mother plants, unless they have recently been obtained as virus indexed plants from someone like UC Davis or Malcomb at Florida Southern College. Then there are the (few) newer rose introductions that have never been grafted to virused Huey/fortuniana rootstock, ever. Most of those are virus free. But unless a nursery SPECIFICALLY states that they use virus free rootstock AND scion material, you can assume their roses are infected. And according to Jeri, at least one nursery claimed to be virus free, but still sent her a virused plant and then denied that it could possibly be infected when she complained! Hi Cori Ann, here is a link to the website. It's in Ireland, but I was able to buy the globes from a US site Cutting Globes. I haven't done anything yet, I was distracted by the stupid cold spell and protecting my roses from 22 degree weather. But most came through it fine, My Fortuniana has buds, so I think I'll try to do some regular cuttings after it finishes, that is supposed to be the best time. What my goal is is to take some of my existing roses that I love and may not be in commerce anymore and bud them on fortuniana. I am beginning to like that rootstock much better than Dr. Huey. I also want to do some hybridizing, so I will have to learn how to do cuttings if I want copies of any successful crosses I do. I have a bunch of those band pots, so I will gather them up and try to get them to root. I have a good spot in my yard that is shaded and I can hopefully get some success along with the cutting globes.
