Hello,

I am looking for some information with regards to gardening in my particular area. I am totally new to gardening. So far I have managed to plant some trees and birds of paradise that have not died yet...and oh, a couple of rosemary bushes. But I am interested in planting vegetables and herbs.

I live outside Florence Arizona. A big problem I have is the soil. It is about 2 or 3 inches of really sandy rocky soil and then caliche. A good 1 to 2 feet of it after that.

What is the best way to setup a garden in this type of environment? Would raised beds work best? Also, the area is exposed 360 degrees to sun and winds (sometimes winds can reach well over 80 miles per hour).

Watering will come from not only rain water but my own well which contains a lot of hard water.

Suggestions are welcome!

Welcome to the desert SW's soil. Your local cooperative extension service (U of A) will be able to help you. But to answer one of Qs, raised beds is the only answer for vegs. I would use a 2 foot high bed. You should check out the Square Foot forum.

Hi Loretta,

Soil preparation is the key to growing vegetables, flowers and herbs here in the desert. I've always used the 'recipe' from the U of A Extension office and Master Gardeners which is 1/3 native soil, 1/3 sand or pumice, and 1/3 composted mulch. Most garden beds are 12 inches deep so this would mean a 4 inch layer of each, blended well with a shovel or rototiller.

I have lots of oregano and rosemary seeds, and an assortment of other herbs and veggies, and a few flowers. Take a look at my trade list and see it there's anything you'd like. I've been looking for a lot of the things you have- I would love to trade for your Lincoln peas, beets, yellow Spanish onions, salsify, atomic red carrot, purple sprouting broccoli, and/or summer savory. Good topic, Paula, thanks for starting a thread. Many people have described the garden as intermediate between nature, with its beauty and softness but also its chaos and cruelty, and the artificial man-created world. I feel this; also, like Ingrid I dream of the earthly paradise, or in my case the Garden of Eden, with the sweet abandon of nature, but with some human intervention: soil improvement; non-native plants; paths and terracing. My sister once described gardening as steering a go-cart down a hill, and this describes my gardening philosophy perfectly. Finding the plant and the site and digging the hole are the initial push to the go-cart; after that the plant is in charge, with me just mulching and clearing out the worst weeds now and then. The plants are doing most of the work, not the gardener. We've tossed around the word "lazy" jokingly, and I bet even the laziest gardeners among us do plenty of work. But it's true that I invest a good deal of thought in indentifying plants that I think will grow well, once established, with very little intervention. I suppose this is a part of my philosophy: I want to work with Nature, for the most part, not against her: I want a collaboration, not warfare. This is a philosophical stance: I suppose I feel like life is already too much of a struggle to want my garden to be a battlefield as well. But at the same time I know that a garden is an artificial creation that continues in life due to the labor of the gardener. I want my garden to be generally a benign presence as far as the environment is concerned. There is my indulgence in those dubious non-native plants. I'm not sure how legitimate it is to introduce them. Otherwise, my standards are generally healthy ones: frugality with water, adding organic matter to the heavy clay, encouragement and introduction of native plants, planting trees. For organic amendment I recycle everything and look for local supplies. No spraying. I want a great variety of plants; I like the garden to be rather untidy, like a dishevelled nymph--ideally--with room for insects and animals, in relative ecological equilibrium. Ladies, Luckily I learned at a young age to pay myself first and did so my entire life. The bugs are still there in high numbers in some places just like 100 years ago, but with a few exceptions you have to do some work to get to them now. The harder they are to get to (and so the least influenced by mankind) the better generally. Why I climbed so many very tall mountains (to 18,000') and hiked miles for weeks into so many wilderness areas. As for the desert temps, yes it can be real serious. But it is also doable with some preparation and common sense when there. We are the real wimps of the natural world, not the leps. Growing up on a working ranch had me head over heels into what made all living things tick from a very early age. But there were other influences as well, including many great writings. A watcher at the Pond (Franklin Russell) is one that got to me for sure many times in my pre teens, so was the adventures and writings of John Wesley Powell during his explorations and expeditions in the Rockies and down the Green and Colorado rivers where I lived. But I still have my first editions of what was probably the most influential to me from the late 50's on, and what took me head on into Marine Biology. Rachel Carson's four books naturally. I had only been to the ocean a couple of times on family vacations before I moved to California right after high school graduation, but had read and reread her four books dozens of times during around a ten year period before then. While about all natural things and what man is doing to them the marine flora and fauna parts simply captivated me as new and unexplored species I just had to get my hands on. So I did. :) Larry

Absolutely investigate square food gardening methods and raised beds. Caution: the spring planting dates in most garden books are a bit late for us folks in the super heat. Florence is Pinal County isn't it?

The best garden "book" for Arizona is the internet. You can find the U of A extension service Master Garden Manual on the web. With all the cotton and dairy farming in your neighborhood, there have got to be folks around with lots of gardening experience. Any organic gardening clubs around?

Hint: Hit Walmart, Home Depot and your favorite nurseries for your seed and bedding plants. It's a bit late for catalog ordering. Plant short seasoned varieties of most veggies. Most places will have their tomato and pepper plants in mid March.

Start small and have fun.

Sunset's Western Garden book ... you really NEED it.

Raised beds help, as does whacking a few holes or cracks in the caliche and pouring pool acid into them. It foams and bubbles and dissolves the caliche.

Hi, I live in Casa Grande, husband works in Florence, it's a bit different there, but not too much as we have friends there with wonderful gardens. Raised beds for sure for veggies..we get a three way mix from The Avocado Nursery, can get it in large containers or by the pickup load, it's great, cheap, mixed already..and plants seem to love it..wind is awful here too, think we live in a wind tunnel. We put our garden in a corner between too walls, and have some trees as wind breaks as well. shade cloth 50% when digits hit three..everything grows like mad..hope this helps some..steph
