How to properly install a gravel driveway
Comments (4)Thanks for all the advice! Hmmm, water. The water doesn't seem to flow at all. And there definitely aren't any springs (it's pretty darn dry when it doesn't rain). The entire property is on top of a hill. The majority of the driveway is pretty level, sloping toward the road a tiny bit if anything. The ground is so soft and sandy, the water just seems to sink down into it rather than flowing anywhere. Good to keep drainage in mind though. Near the house, the driveway will curve and slope more steeply up to the garage. Might need to do something there up direct drainage (maybe a tinhorn under the drive so the water doesn't flow across it?) Any other thoughts or advice? Should we put down any ground/weed killer before the gravel to keep the tree and other roots from sprouting up through it?...See Moregetting rid of gravel
Comments (4)Thanks for the advice. Yea, David and Kasie, I didn't word that very well. I do know that trash ends up in the landfill :) I meant that doing that would be my last resort. In fact, my composter is what's "hiding" all the gravel right now! I did sign up for Chicago freecycle yesterday so once I empty my composter, I will definately "offer" it up to someone and I'll even help shovel it! Thanks again!...See Morehow to get rid of a mouse
Comments (14)I've had voles (field mice) chew on every potato tuber that grew under hay mulch except 1, in a potato patch of nearly 1,000 square feet! I no longer grow potatoes under mulch. They eat ripe tomatoes. Voles eat the ends off green beans. They burrow up, under pumpkins, squash, and my beautiful melons! Once inside, they eat the seeds and sometimes, nothing else. I've had seedlings chewed off at the soil that I have blamed on voles. And, sprouting corn seed has been dug up, sometimes repeatedly! The old-fashioned Victor traps, baited with a raisin dipped in peanut butter work better than most anything. Tuck it in where a bird won't get to it. I agree completely with the Crazybeaglelady ~ There isn't such thing as "one mouse." Nope, you have a colony. Your garden environment benefits them or you wouldn't have seen the one. Voles are a huge problem in orchards and with no-till agriculture. "A meadow vole can eat nearly its own weight daily," according to Rutgers University. Since they weigh up to 3 ounces, 6 voles in your garden will eat a pound of some kind of food, every day. Moving them won't do anyone any good. In the UK, they have been found to attack and eat frogs. A strange vole will probably be attacked by other voles. digitSteve...See MoreHow do you get rid of crack weeds?
Comments (15)Ok if nobody has a better plan, I think I'll load that vinegar in a spray bottle for those weeds that come out of the "wall" of landscaping bricks. If they die, then maybe I can cut them off close with a knife. I just use regular grocery store vinegar, nothing fancy. But it helps if you do it on dry plants when the weather will be dry (no rain) for maybe 3 days. Rain/watering and damp ground that wicks does dilute it. I got really mad at my horsetail weeds and injected a few of them in their fat stems with vinegar -- with a syringe and needle. Killed em. Sarahrock, I did pour some vinegar on a couple of sprinkler heads (because I kept losing where they were) and it made maybe a 4" circle of dead grass with the sprinkler head in the center. Other than that, I've just used it in the driveway. The paintbrush is a good idea, or just use the vinegar farther away from the plants and pull the ones too close to your plants. You can also test it out elsewhere, where it doesn't matter as much. Pour it on one weed and see if it gets another weed nearby....See MoreMaryMcP Zone 8b - Phx AZ
