Well doris1 poison is all very good in theory but those furries still dig. Maybe you could do a hanging basket or container?

I've got tiny little Johnny Jump Ups...had very poor germination I'm embarassed to say. Don't know what's wrong with me and these things.

I'm going to put some in containers on the deck so I'm sure to have some before whomever eats all the Violas and Violets around here don't get them all.

My mother used to love their "little faces" too. That's why I'm trying so hard to grow them.

I'm so glad you're not under water at this point in the year. Hurray!

Such lovely violas. Mine germinated well and are just starting to grow, hope some are as pretty as yours. Ohh, and poppy blooms, I can hardly wait.

Still waiting for my first WS blooms (unless you count the lettuce that bolted!). I have buds on the annual poppies --- my first year with poopies, so excited! I also have a few buds on my marigolds. However, I have nasturtiums in a new spot and they have glorious foliage but nary a bud. Methinks it's too rich there for them.

Oh, well. The foliage is still a darn sight nicer looking than bare ground.

Newbie in nj, we have certainly been getting a lot of rain. Lots of things are pounded but so far not too much flooding. The ditch is working and I have been working on it too.
I think I was guaranteed some germination with the Johnnies, I traded for them with several ppl in order to be sure.

Dr.Deb, I know what you mean about waiting. I have lots of buds on the poppies but just that one bloom so far. My first nasturtium bloom opened today though. Those were the earliest I WSowed so it will be some time before I see more.

Doris, what kind of furries are you dealing with? I have lots of squirrels that make me nuts but not as nuts as my dog. She is great for chasing things away but horrible about not digging, laying on or just walking through my gardens.

Flood!!!!!!!! Your babies are ALL gorgeous. Poppies are so delicate I could just stare at them for polonged period of time :) Sounds like most of us have some weird occurrances this year with "bolting" and non-sprouting things. Oh, well, I guess that's what keep gardening interesting..esp. the WS aspect of it adds a whole new level of wonder.

Ok, this is ridiculous! You know how "No good deed goes unpunished"?

I sowed two containers of toms and two containers of marigolds on the same day, one of each for a friend of mine and me. Hers went gangbusters, mine did nothing, so I bought my tomato plants and forgot about having marigolds.

I planted a smaller flower bed between my neighbors patio and mine. My very first w/s bloom (a single, tiny alyssum) sits about an inch away from her patio!! Should I no longer sow for myself? What the heck??

Nancy Drew, that's just sad. Maybe if you threaten your plants with being given away to the neighbor they will start blooming for you. It could be that the ones you gave away said "Holy cow, she already gave us away. If we don't grow and bloom, she may just come over here and compost us!" Sometimes tough talk is the only way to go :)

I finally got my first blooms yesterday --- one poppy, one nasturtium, and one marigold. Hurray for blooms!

Oh nancy, that sounds rough. How many did you sow for your friend can she give you a start of hers? Maybe you should do all yours in the same container then pot them up later. That way you get to choose who goes and who stays. My first blooms were four tiny alyssum too. All the way behind the garage. The ones closer to the house haven't shown much yet but the ones on the side I can't see are blooming. I think they are shy.

Sorry had to include this one. This was grown from seed that I got in a spice kit over five years ago at my wedding. It has been sitting in the sun on my spice rack for all that time. Today it bloomed.

Here the Johnny Jump up are getting tired already, but they started blooming a good 2.5 months ago... either last years fall sprouters and spring sprouters both puttering out for the time being. Fall usually brings more blooms :)

My Chinese Houses started blooming about 1 week ago...Pretty, but plants are way small yet.

I was surprised how soon self-sown alyssum blooms and should continue until frost. I've got them all over in front and transplanted some to the back. I was lucky we had some rain or I would have lost some or had to water like crazy. Even after drooping, they are coming around. Overcast skies help, too.

Usually I like to plant anything when it is overcast.

Overcast huh, I hadn't thought of that, makes sense though. I often plant when it is overcast but that is because I won't be able to get out when it's raining and it might rain all day so I hurry up and go.
