Can I plant small trees close to a S. Magnolia?

Hi have a small cookie cutter backyard (50'wide x 30'deep). I planted a small Southern Magnolia on the far right quadrant of my backyard and was wondering if I could plant 2 small ornamental trees close (as in 5 feet) by it. I know that Southern Magnolias get pretty big but also that they grow rather slow. My Magnolia looks pretty sad by itself and I'd like to give that portion of my yard a little more heft by planting a Dogwood and a Texas Redbud around it (or do you have better suggestions, I live in San Antonio, TX). Would this be okay for the long run? I read that both of these trees are small and do well under larger trees but I'm not sure of the distance. Thanks!
