I've been looking into this idea myself. Not just the dark themed gardens, but themed gardens in general. I can't seem to find pics of themed gardens. Does anyone have a link or a pic of a themed garden? More specifally, the black, or gothic garden, or a fairy garden? But I'd like to see any themed garden!!

Oh, for a weird plant, try a voodoo lily! I picked one up at meijer, granted it was squishy, I need to go buy a new bulb, but I think it's getting late to plant them. This pic is like what i bought. They're are other varieties, like the devils tongue, I just can't find them anywhere but on the internet. They're not hardy in zone 5, so the bulb has to be dug up in fall.

Oh, and what about Toad lilies? They come in a range of colors from pink, purple, blue and orange. Most are spotted weird.

Your DH sounds like mine. :) I bought him some Dracunculus vulgaris and he loves it. Just don't try to sniff it. They smell like roadkill. Probably a good candidate for WS too but they take a while to bloom. I have ten two year old babies (self sown) and they are nowhere near bloom size yet.

Bells of Ireland looks like nothing else in the garden, and it winter sows well.

There are lots of dark-colored blooms out there, and things with bronze/dark foliage. How about some of those midnight purple-black coleus? Now THOSE look Goth to me! I think their variety name is 'Palisandra,' but I'm not sure. Check the Park Seed catalog, I know they have them.

Japanese painted fern is unusual - dark green foliage with silver and burgundy accents.

If you can put a climber there, maybe a dark purple clematis (like good old 'Jackmanii'), or a dark blood red one like 'Niobe' or 'Warsaw Nike.'

For silver, lamium 'Hermann's Pride' is quite striking.

There are many extremely dark irises, in all heights and forms. 'Superstition' grows well for me, but it's only one among many good ones.

Other inexpensive oddities include hens and chicks and various sedums. Hens and chicks can take a surprising amount of shade, I've found.

Ok, so far I'll need to show him the Nicotiana, Scabiosa, the toad lilies and perilla. :) The Dracunculus vulgaris sounds ... interesting. Those pictures are nifty, and they look great, but the scent might scare company away - it's fairly near to our fire pit. :D

Laurel, I've been trying to find a good coleus, thank you for the suggestion. :) All I've been finding are great ones - in mixes. :P
I might give him one of my painted ferns - I have a (slowly growing, finally) fern bed just under our bedroom window. The clematis sounds great, too, I think it might work to anchor a corner. I'll have to ask him about the hens&chicks, too. I don't know if it would wind up too damp for them.

Now I have to look at 'Midnight Candy' Night Phlox, 'Evening Sun' Sunflowers, and I'd completely forgotten about 'Dark Opal' Basil (I Maybe I'll give him a few more square feet... ^_^;

For blacks there's Black Prince Snapdragon. For oddities spiderwort, just an odd-looking plant I think. I gave one to a fiend and she told me again today how much she loves it.

You don't need to be afraid of the dracunculus. It only smells bad for a day or two while it waits for the flies to pollinate it. I have one right next to my back door, and I hardly notice its foulness.

Sea holly! Don't know if there is enough sun for that there or not, but it's worth a shot. They are easy to summer sow and I will have seeds later this season that you can sow this summer.

I would also consider datura - the white variety.

Another climber, Black current swirl datura, or devils trumpet. I have so got to get some of these!!

Oh, and that bat flower, is that grown as a house plant, or could it be grown as an annual in our cold zone?

I think burnet is kinda freaky looking. It makes fern-like foliage and puts up wirey stems with lozenge-shaped flowers, some are maroon and some are an odd-colored, sickly pink. There are black elephant ears which are just plain creepy. Caladiums can have blood-red leaves, some look like they're splattered with blood. There is a purple-leaved sweet potato vine, some oxalis have dark blotches, look for earl grey larkspur, and maltese cross may also work.

Ok, as tempting as they are, I do have to (personally) veto any of the Datura. There's two littles here... DS would likely be fine, but DD is only 18months now and she's already a 2year old terror. ^_^ Keeps me busy.

Now I have to get my husband to pay attention to things BEFORE I get them home. :D
Sea Holly looks wonderful - geez, if all these great suggestions keep coming I'll be re-digging beds on all three sides of the building. :D (Which would be fine, if I could get him to help sift!! *chuckle*

The Bat Flower (Tacca) is tropical and really needs a greenhouse during the winter. I'm starting some from seed and they can take a very long time to germinate. I had some that took 6 months on a seed mat! You can find blooming sized plants at some nurseries but they are kind of pricey. Maybe you can find a kind person on one of the exchange pages. It's definitely the perfect flower for a goth garden.

What about Heuchera? I can't remember if mine is a Palace Purple or another one, but it is a dark, dark purple with silver veining. It takes shade, and at my house is short :)

I love that little lime green nikki ;-) I've done another one, but the name escapes me; it is hip-height with flowers the color of limeade. All nikkis are nice because they're so heavily scented at night, there's one called night-blooming jasmine, which has a very heady and sensuous scent. I'll also suggest Moon Flowers, the night blooming morning glory.

I was outside working in the beds, thinking about this thread. I think I must have read Dracula a dozen times or more, it's definitely one of my favorite books. In the book there's a woman named Mina (short for Wilhemena), so perhaps just to honor this gothic novel heroine, you might plant Mina lobata whch is an unusual-looking vine, it is sometimes called Spanish Flag. As I worked outside and yanked out volunteer garlic I thought that garlic might be appropriate in your goth garden--you will need something to fend off vampires so garlic is pefect, I don't know where you could find wolfbane, but hoarhound might do instead. And another creepy (literally) plant that might work is Egyptian Walking Onions.

Alrighty, so far I've gotten 'Yes'-s for both Nicotiana, and some red clematis. :)

I love the thought of putting the garlic there, as soon as I find one I like for this area. I'll also probably either get the 'opal' basil or "Purple Ruffles", all the basil I have so far this year is cinnamon so I wouldn't be overdoing it... right? ;)

Lisa, I actually have both of those - they're the only two I have, and I just got them this year. As they already have planned spaces, I guess I'll just separate them next year or something. ^_^

I love black pussy willows, and I really love black bamboo... although I think the second is far out of my price range and probably wouldn't do too well here. :) We used to have (regular) pussy willow here and lost it two years ago.

Batflower- That's the name of it!! :D I'd seen pictures a few years ago, but no one had the name. Those are gorgeous though, I wish I had the ability to take care of one. :( Maybe someday I'll luck out. ^_^

This has been great - I think I'm definitely going to spread the garden out. There's just too much cool stuff here to cram into the little area that's cleared. :D

I got two portions cleared and sifted yesterday, so I planted what I already had. A lot has been getting a bit rootbound, I figured I could just move a couple of things later. I'd rather move them then lose them.

Now I need to get a new digital- I can't believe how it is now compared to the weeds that were there; it's hard to imagine how it's going to look by fall. :D
