San Antonio Rose color?

Hi Folks,

If anyone is actually growing San Antonio Rose could you please tell me what the color really is? I've read ads that say red,red-orange and dark rose-what's the real deal? Lora

I too am frustrated by the inconsistancies in this case and many other ads that swap pictures, get the color wrong etc.

I have 70 t.c. clones of San Antonio Rose from the summer of '04 maybe they will have early bloom this year. 40% of Danube(Donau) same age bloomed last spring. I was amazed.

I am jut totally disgusted with the wholesale bulb market.Between misleading photos & descriptions and the ever so slim chance of actually getting what you think you are purchasing I doubt I will be bringing in anything new for awhile. (and I'm out of room,too!) Lora

"It's about Thyme" in South Austin is where I bought my three. You can give them a call to see when they bring them out. they grow all theirs from seed so they have many colors to chose from. They did say that even though the parent may of been the color stated, sometimes they turn out different! Only one of mine bloomed last year and it was correct. The other two started to bloom a few weeks ago just in time for the cold so I didn't get to see their colors!! Darn!!

Thanks Henry. With so much prey to feast on hopefully beneficial insects, "the friendlies" will increase enough in the open landscape to keep chilli thrips under control. Perhaps this is happening in Florida as I read some reports on the Florida Forum that folks had had chilli thrips in the past, but then the infestation abated. A friend wrote this on the Texas Forum: "I was living in Hawaii when whiteflies first made their appearance. It was an ugly thing. Their population exploded exponentially. Their were so many whiteflies that our ceilings were coated in them. They were absolutely everywhere. They smothered a lot of leaves in sheltered areas even though we had significant ocean breeze. It was disgusting.It took about 6 months and then they had a population implosion and it attained a balance. One never saw them. Perhaps bugs and geckos had learned to eat them. I don't know what happened. I hope some natural enemy to chilli thrips comes forth and something like this happens." Now I'm find chilli thrips are on several other plants in the garden. After seeing suspicious leaves I've ID'd them on Coral vine, Henry Duelberg salvia and Texas smoke tree by tapping the affected leaf and looking at the tiny yellow dots moving around with a 10 power jewelers loop. And I do mean tiny. They are less than the size of a period and barely visible in bright light on white paper with my reading glasses on. They are much smaller than flower thips, and looked just like the photos. Also several pale colored tiny spiders quickly scurried off the paper. They were just a little larger than the chilli thrips. Hopefully they were eating them. This makes one reluctant to spray even with spinosad, but knocking them back before winter may significantly reduced their population next summer. I don't know. Right now I'm trying to reduce the number of the most susceptible plants.

It's the nature of the beast for San Antonio Rose to bloom July-August. As far as passing on the late bloom to offspring, it's iffy. SAR is an F1 hybrid between the winter-hardy H. aulicum var. stenopetalum and the now-extinct Brazilian H. traubii f. doraniae. Regardless of the SAR's bloom time, the seedlings will revert to a mish-mash of traits between those two species and whatever you cross it with. I'd think the chances are slim that you'll get one with the desired bloom time. BUT...genetics being what they are, you might get lucky. You might weight the throw of the dice in your favor by selfing your SAR with it's own pollen. IF both the parent specie are late blooming ( I honestly don't know), then your seedlings should be, too. John

Pat, congratulations on rooting the rose cuttings! The recommendation when rooting roses it to transfer them into larger pots when you see roots coming out of the small rooting containers which would usually be four to six weeks after sticking them, but since yours are in a larger container where you can't see the roots I'd give them plenty of time, maybe a couple of months or more, to be sure they were well rooted before transplanting them. Some roses are really slow about rooting and you can't always count on roots just because the cutting is leafing out. They often do that and never root at all. You can usually tell if there are roots by giving the cutting a very gentle tug. Once I had a cutting take six months before forming roots, but since it kept its leaves I waited it out just to see if it would finally root and it did. Wishing you luck with all your cuttings! Does anyone have a good pic of this San Antonio Rose snapped first hand? It is a very interesting variety, and I was thinking about getting one, but I remember seeing it for ridiculous prices or only offered as seedling, and not flowering size bulb.

Soultan - I found the bulbs in question being offered by Stokes Tropicals... I've never ordered from them, so have no information about the company... they do have San Antonio Rose Hippeastrum at a very reasonable price, though... whether they are still available, I'm not certain...

The color of 'San Antonio Rose' changes during flower-life. When the blossom opens, it has a deep firy red:

I got it from Plant Delights, where it is no more in the range, unfortunately. Luckily for all friends this plant produces more bulblets then flowers.

Before they fade and wither they will change the color and get a more bluish touch.

Yes, yes, yes....lovely! I have one pot of SAR and it loves to give out babies.

Thys...More questions about SAR:

How big is the bulb before it blooms? Mine is still small and keeps giving out bulblets thus the bulb is not getting any bigger since I acquired it.

How many flowers/scape? And how long do they last?

Does it need any special treatment than the regular varieties?

Jodi, it is out of stock... Too bad. I would have asked them anyway if they are selling it as seedlings or flowering ready adults... These nurseries usually sell young plants, and they drive me crazy with this... Bulbous plants should not be sold as seedlings.

Mariava, my biggest bulb has ~2" in diameter - and didn't flower yet for 2 years. The bulb which did flower 1/2 year ago (end August) has only 1 1/2" in diameter, it made 2 scapes (1 month between) with 2 blossoms each, short-living blossoms for 4-5 days only. They need absolutely a colder period for inducing the flowers, though they take the needed long time afterwards.
I have never seen so many leaves from one bulb as in the normal TETs are necessary to build flowers.

But: the really nice and decorative leaves comfort us over the long time without blossoms.

It's a nice pot full of bulbs with pretty leaves, Thys, and the leaves seem to have a nice red coloring to them! The leaves actually ARE pretty!

From what I gather, this type is an old fashioned garden variety, found mostly in Texas... growth habit is approximately 13-16 inches in height... is this correct?

Soultan - Glasshouseworks still offers it, not too pricey... link below... and when I googled it, I came across a couple of other places I'd never heard of offering bulbs, although, I have no idea as to size or other information...

Glasshouseworks also sells them as seedlings, and their shipping charges are ridiculous.

I bought some bulbs from Glasshouse works a few years ago. The bulbs arrived in very good shape. They were small, averaging about 1" - 2" dia. They were apparently someone's experimentation with cross pollenating species and hybrids. They have grow into intesting plants with unique flowers. The flowers appear more as species than as hybrids.
Regarding SA Rose: they will have a distinct red keel on the foliage, with a redish underside.

As far as the merchants mentioned. Stokes has a very good rep with the Florida Forum folks. I have not ordered from them.

As far as Glasshouseworks. I ordered from them only once. I was looking for a Couple Stromanthe house plants. Then prices and shipping are a bit steep. However, after waiting for almost 2 months for delivery I finally received my plants. They were beautiful and they sent me 5 plants instead of the 3 I ordered for taking so long and not telling me earlier that they had sold out and were waiting on new ones. The plants were quite healthy too. I ended up giving the two extra plants to my boss as a Christmas present. I probably would not order from them again.
