Anyone else out there wishing for cooler temps and some rain???

I usually don't do this, but I'm finding that it's simply too hot to transplant these days. I still have a whole milk jug worth of poppies which are very precious to me and wondering how they will fare since they aren't in the ground yet. Looking forward to Sunday, which should only be in the sixties and in those babies go.

On the flip side, my phlomis russeliana finally sprouted! Yeah!

Oh, yes. No rain in over a month, and already almost to the 90's or so it feels in the sun. My babies are crying for a drink.

We have all your rain. I will gladly blow a little your direction.

I'm sure in a month or two I'll be wishing for more rain, but for now we've had all our ground will absorb. :)

Dude, I enjoyed mowing the month of June. Great exercise. Sure beats watering (which takes 100x longer and 10x more costly) and watching plants suffer with dieback in the surrounding woods here. Enjoy your rain while you can! Finally got 3/4" today which ended a 39 day period without rain greater that 1/8". Plants are starting to cash out so just this bit helps after this week of near record temps and windy conditions.

Jay, I was in a really cranky mood by late afternoon yesterday because our high temperature once again over-achieved. Our forecast was for 98 and we hit 106. This constant over-achieving on the part of our high temps is driving me up a wall. However, rainfall finally arrived accompanied by much lightning, wind, thunder, etc. and we had several little showers run through one after another. We ended up with a tiny bit less than 0.7"....maybe 0.65 or 0.68". It was wonderful to have rainfall again, and the temperature plunged from 106 to 79 before dark. I know that the less than 7/10s of an inch is only a drop in the bucket compared to what we need, but eventually all those drops in the bucket will add up. Today is supposed to be cooler--only the low to mid 90s, and then 98 again tomorrow (wonder if I should expect 106 again?) before another cool-down arrives. This morning has remained cloudy and cool, so the house is quiet, quiet, quiet because the AC hasn't been running. The clouds are burning off now, so I guess the AC will kick on in a little while. Were it not for the near-epidemic levels of West Nile Virus around me, I'd have spent the cool, cloudy morning outside working in the garden. Since the mosquitoes that transmit it are most active in the early morning and early evening hours, I guess I'll go outside at midafternoon and work when the mosquitoes are less likely to be out. I haven't seen many mosquitoes, but I sure don't want to be bitten by one carrying WNV. The news stories of the horrible West Nile Virus aftereffects occurring even to some young people in their teens through their 30s make me wary of taking a chance on being bitten by one of those skeeters. Normally the older you are, the harder the WNV hits you. In recent tests of mosquitoes trapped in the Dallas area, 50% of the mosquitoes tested were carriers of WNV and I don't like those odds. If we hadn't had rain, the prospect of having mosquitoes around wouldn't bother me as much. But then, if we hadn't had rain, I wouldn't feel like I should be out doing anything in the garden. The rains, skimpy though they may be, are reviving some plants, but others are just too far gone and I might as well yank them and clear those areas for fall planting. Dawn

Chicago has gotten lots of rain as well as two hail storms and Monday there were tornado warnings. It has been a cold and wet spring again like last year.this is probably our new climate. I'm still waiting to get my sweet potatoe slips and this is the end of June! My strawberries are the worst they mold on the vine from too much rain and humidity. My garden is mulched think with organic hay and the slugs are having a feast. I can't really fight them when it is so wet, I hand picked some today and yesterday a whole can full! My potatoes look good that's about it. My garden is way behind anyway due to late cold weather.

Being less than 10 miles from Montecito, I would like to share: The area had been carved up in to Mandatory and Voluntary evacuations for the better part of a month for the fire. I was in a voluntary zone and did pack my photos and drive around with them for a week. I had friends who where out of their homes or knew if they left to buy groceries, they might not get back in. We cancelled parties, Christmas shopping and a variety of things. This was a hard Christmas season. We were all pretty tired of being evacuated or on warnings The rain evacuations were posted with a Monday at noon deadline. Homes above hwy 192 where Mandatory and those below voluntary. I would guess most of those people in the voluntary zones followed the guidelines of packing your car, facing it out and being prepared to leave at a moments notice. When I went to bed, I checked the forecast and there was no hour with over .50" of rain. The rain was more a fine mist at midnight. Would you have left? At 2:32am the phone weather alert blared with the alarm. At 3:52 a second alarm sounded and then one again right after 4am. They received 1/2" in 5 minutes. The mud flows broke the Highline water supply pipes from the lakes in several places. It broke gas lines, knocked out power, cable etc. Most of the people that lost their lives were in the voluntary zone below hwy 192. I would guess they all had their cars packed and ready, they just did not anticipate what was about to happen. In hindsight, they should have changed their evacuation zones to reflect low spots and where water might go as mandatory. But if you would have told me the problem in the middle of the night at the Montecito Inn was mud in the lobby, I would have wondered why it was there and not in the creek beds. I don't think anyone thought that light rain would have torn the mainlines from the lakes. This was a horrible result of 5 minutes of heavy rain.

We're having glorious low 80's with a nice breeze and such pure sunshine things can't help but grow. It's almost like we went straight from winter into summer. I love this weather and will take all I can get even though it means watering a lot more. Our springs are usually cold and wet.

No, I'm happy just the way the weather is right now, give me sunshine and warm temps any day. The birds are still chirping out there, spring has finally made its appearance big time. Late afternoon I got my tomatoes planted, these were not WS but indoor sown. I've got 4 sprouts of WS tomatoes and this year I'm going to do a comparison. When its cool and rainy, I ache.

Nope! 70's here; not hot enough yet for me - bring on summer! Actually, along the coast here it's only in the low 50s in the early mornings - I've been bolting out of the PJs to plant seedlings out.

We're the opposite of you here, Marianne.
This is the first week this year that we have hit 70...at least I'm pretty sure we hit 70. It's been in the 40s and 50s for most of the month...finally started reaching the 60s last week.
It's weird. I'm spoiled from 2 warm and early Springs. I'm getting upset that my tomatoes haven't sprouted yet. But then, I get over it because the weather has been cool enough for me to weed like a madwoman and get other seedlings in their new homes.
I hope the weather calms down for all of you out west and, well GGG...did Atlanta ever NOT have a drought? --They were in one when I lived there in the late 80s. Pollen on the cars that looked like green snow. Then, when I came back North, I suddenly had allergies. Stay cool down there!

Don't get me wrong, I love the nice weather we're finally having. It's just that I'm worried about all the babies that I have which haven't gone in yet and I just don't see rigging loads of mini tents to keep them from toasting. Especially my poppies. They are really moping. I transplanted some last weekend and try to keep them plenty watered. Another kind, which is so dear to my heart - I finally was able to find someone via the GW who had seeds of the wonderful poppies that grow on Monhegan Island off the coast of Maine. I had previously tried buying them from the lady who sells them on the island (got the address via the local chamber of commerce - the things we go through for that special plant ;-) ) but apparently she had had a mold problem over the winter and had none to sell. I would hate for them not to succeed in my garden after all I went through to get them - and they are the most beautiful sight to behold when they flower. I am looking forward to sharing with my WS buddies next fall!

I'm happy with the temps in the 70's & 80's but we desperately need some rain. It's been over a month since we've had any measurable precipitation. At least the nights have been cool so there's plenty of condensation but I've still had to water frequently. There's rain in the forecast today, we'll see.

We had a lovely, summer-like stretch of weather this past week - 70s and 80s, clear and sunny. It has been VERY dry, though, so I did a lot of "spot watering" with a can, and some kelp emulsion fertilizer. I did plant some things out (in the evenings, well watered), and watered them every evening after their daily baking. I also had to water my long shade bed - it wasn't dessicated, but it was definitely thirsty and lagging. I also had to open all my containers and check their moisture level every day; I had to water them several times.

Yesterday we finally got some blessed, beautiful rain. It was accompanied by a prolonged rumbling booming slow storm, but I didn't mind that at all. The temp dropped 10-15 degrees in a half hour. You could practically HEAR the whole garden go "AAAaaaah. . ." as it soaked up the rain. Today I can just watch things grow. My DH will have to mow again this weekend, and put in the A/Cs (I enjoy the nice weather, but I have little tolerance for the humid heat in the house). I'm glad I direct sowed my nasturtiums yesterday - the Lord watered them in for me really well, lol.

I'm thankful that winter's gone, but I don't think 85 degrees is the best environment for transplanting seedlings.
