How do I trim Red Maple before transplant from ground to pot?.
Comments (13)I pulled the tree out of the ground yesterday, May 2014 and the root pruning I did in 2012 and 2013 paid off big time. I dug around the tree with a pick ax and it popped right out of the ground with a nice tight root ball consisting of many tiny roots. IâÂÂve also made the decision to train this tree into a formal upright shape so the dual trunks had to go. I was very nervous about this step but it had to be done: I cut the tree in half⦠And I think it looks great! The remaining trunk has nice taper as a result of cutting off the second large branch (itâÂÂs about 6â diameter at the base and 30â tall from the top of the soil). There are no mature branches left so it will take a long time before it evens out but I think the trunk has a good start. IâÂÂm looking for any advice on where to go from here. How do I shape it? When do I re-pot it? Should I cut the trunk shorter or is it a good height? Have I screwed up completely or is the right path?...See MoreTransplanting young wld woods trees
Comments (2)Whether the trees are worth moving is more of a judgement call than a matter of fact, especially without more info/pictures. You are in a better position than any of us to know whether your effort and these particular trees are worth moving. You might also weigh the possibility and benefits of purchasing nursery stock for the project. As to how to move them, here is a link to a set of instructions that should answer most of your questions about how to move them: sites.google.com/site/tnarboretum/Home/planting-a-tree-or-shrub and here is a guide that can help give you some idea of how much rootball would need to be moved: sites.google.com/site/tnarboretum/Home/generic-rootball-size-guide As JQ said, you may want to go a little deeper than the guide shows for the the oaks, but don't expect to get even most of the taproot. I generally do not recommend adding amendments to backfill. Adding more than 5% organic amendment (or other amendment, for that matter) to the backfill is almost never beneficial and is frequently detrimental to the optimal establishment of woody plants....See MoreDo you think this maple tree will survive transplanting? Comments (4)Thanks for the input everyone. Yeah I think its just the angle of the photo. I had someone hold the tree so that the roots where just touching the bottom of the hole and I back filled and the dirt actually stopped at almost the exact depth that it was planted in the woods. I just used the darkened and soil stained bark as a guide. Man it looks so good in its new home. I wanna see birds landing in that thing next year! Would a good watering once a week be enough for it and should I stop watering when the temps fall below 32? Thanks everyone!...See MoreHow can I save my tree from shock/death; transplanted; dying.
Comments (3)I asked as similar question somewhere else a few weeks ago and someone suggested some additional shade. Definitely not sugar. Very dilute fertilizer. Don't abandon it. In spring it may suddenly come alive....See More- 12 years ago
