Chad and others. this is what I was reffering to. folks jump in but no one takes the lead. it does take someone to volunteer this. in addition, not all folks have what they want and what they have to offer may not be appealing to others. this is why I feel one-on-one exchange doesnt work that well unless there are more than few varities available to exchange. I suggest other people to bring on ideas. I suggest that whoever is interested sign-up at http://groups.google.com/group/veggieseedexchange and we go from there. Gardenweb is great site and will continue to post our things here, for specific exchange, communication on googlegroup would be very helpful. Thoughts?

I can't live without Rosa Bianca! Ever since I discovered it a few years ago I grow it every year. The texture is different from the "regular" eggplants, and you can just cut it up into cubes and sauté it in olive oil until it's browned and tender--and it doesn't get mushy! You can do that with or without peeling it, but I like it peeled! I just add salt--can add any spices or onions, tomatoes, whatever. And you can use it for any of the other things you use eggplant for too. It's white/pink/lavender. Just discovered I've never taken very many pics of my eggplants! Will try to remedy that this year--if I get any! This is the only Rosa Bianca pic I have, and this one is close to "picking size." I also discovered that Galine has a very similar texture, so that's another one I've been growing every year. Galine is purple, but you can use it the same way as Rosa. It's oblong, and maybe a little larger than Rosa. I grow mine in the ground, and with warm soil they take off pretty quickly. I just seeded mine last week and last time I looked they weren't up yet! I know it's late, but I'm an optimist! Last year I couldn't get anything to germinate, or live if it did, so the ones I had last year were planted around now or later since I kept trying again. Only got a couple Rosas, but it was worth it. And I had another (multiple crown) plant that was still a small seedling when I got home from a trip on May 28--it was planted in the ground in early June, and even that one would have produced 4-6 edible eggplants--IF we hadn't gotten the flood which had everything standing in water for most of a week! How quickly they grow, and how well, depends on the soil, the water, the sun, the heat..... What you get is gonna be different for everybody! Rosa Bianca is supposed to take longer to produce than many of the others, but for me it's usually been the first one I get anything of of! So don't believe everything your read. You need to just try them in your conditions. You could conceivably find plants for Rosa Bianca at a "real" garden center, but I sure would call first before driving all over the place. Seed for Rosa should be fairly easy to find, but I agree that since you're just kind of starting, it would be good to get a plant this time. A regular purple one that's almost always good it Classic. I grew that one every year until I discovered Rosa! It's the one my brother in Illinois grows. Can't sauté that one--it gets mushy, but it seldom gets bitter and it's good for all the "other" things you do with eggplant! I doubt that you'd find plants for that one locally, and seeds can be hard to find too--Harris carries them. Black Beauty is the one you'll find available as plants at most places. Kelly at Timberline lists what he carries online (if he's not out of some of them), and he shows 5 varieties: I tried the Japanese ones a couple years and wasn't wild about them. I like the "fatter" ones! Black Beauty (Classic) - 80 days Gretel (Japanese white) - 55 days Hansel (Japanese) - 55 days Millionaire (Japanese) - 68 days White Romanseca - 85 days Whatever you wind up trying this year, I HIGHLY recommend you try a Rosa Bianca next year!
