'Fall planting' versus 'Spring planting'

I placed an order for a bunch of trees (shipped bare root, not balled) late summer so I'd have them to plant in the Fall. Afterwards, I was notified (because a few of the trees in this order weren't ready) the order wouldn't be shipped til Spring. I was given the option to have it split: some shipped now with the remainder in the Spring and pay twice shipping.

I've always thought Fall was the best time for tree planting. This is what I planned and would prefer to do but I can see there might be a few advantages to having them held for Spring planting, as well. Do any advantages outweigh the disadvantages? I'd like to hear your experiences, opinions, etc. regarding the pros and cons of "Spring planting" versus "Fall planting" before I make my final decision. I'm sure some of you will come up with issues that hadn't yet occurred to me.
